Life

origin

Franz came from the Mecklenburg primitive noble family Blücher . He was the son of the Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742-1819) and his wife Karoline Amalie, née von Mehling (1756-1791). In 1814 his father (and thus also the son) was raised to the hereditary count, in 1815 the father received the personal prince dignity , which was not passed on to his son. Only his son, Count Gebhard Bernhard Carl von Blücher , was reigned (and hereditary) in 1861.

Military career

Blücher came on June 5, 1792 as a cornet in the Hussar Regiment "von der Goltz" of the Prussian Army and took part in the First Coalition War in 1793/94 . He fought in the battles near Hasnon, Weidenthal , Kirrweiler , Edesheim , Saarbrücken and in the battle of Kaiserslautern . At that time he became second lieutenant on April 29, 1794 and received the order Pour le Mérite on July 26, 1794 . On January 17, 1805, Blücher was promoted to prime lieutenant and at the beginning of October 1805 he became his father's second adjutant . In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the Battle of Auerstedt , then came to Lübeck and was made inactive after the surrender. On September 29, 1807, Blücher rose to the position of staff assistant master .

On May 5, 1808, Blücher became Rittmeister and remained adjutant in the "Blücher" corps, which was intended for Pomerania . In this capacity he was promoted to major on September 1, 1809 . With retroactive effect to November 1, 1807, his salary was increased to 500 thalers on January 7, 1809. On June 21, 1809 Blücher received half-salary leave for an indefinite period in order to restore his health; from June 30, 1809 he was paid his full salary again. On November 27, 1811 he was aggregated to the 2nd Silesian Hussar Regiment . On December 12, 1811, he was given another six weeks vacation due to his health problems, but a farewell was refused on December 4, 1811.

On February 16, 1813, Blücher came as a commander in the 1st Silesian Hussar Regiment . With the association he fought in the wars of liberation in the battle of Großgörschen . In the battle near Peterswalde he got seriously injured in the head and was taken prisoner with the approval of the king and exchanged for Colonel Perrigord. Blücher took part in the fighting at Coulommiers and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class on May 19, 1813 for his behavior in the Battle of Großgörschen . He also became a lieutenant colonel on August 11, 1813 . On April 24, 1814, Blücher received permission to accept the Swedish Order of the Sword . On April 25, 1814, he again took leave for an indefinite period in order to restore his health in Bad Pyrmont and Nenndorf . During this time he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class on May 31, 1814.

On June 3, 1814, the day of the Victory Parade in Berlin, his father Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. raised to the hereditary count status, so that now his son Franz von Blücher was entitled to the title of Count Blücher of Wahlstatt.

His head injury was increasingly affecting his state of mind. Thereupon Blücher tried to take his own life in the spring of 1815, before he received his departure on November 29, 1815 with the character of a major general. From June 16, 1817, he received a pension of 800 thalers and died on October 10, 1829 in Berlin-Köpenick. He spent his final years in a closed institution.
