Hiking trails in the Palatinate Forest

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typical marked path

Some of the hiking trails in the Palatinate Forest are long-distance hiking trails , which are mainly managed by the Palatinate Forest Association and are linked to the national and international long-distance hiking network. On the other hand, there are local circular and themed hiking trails, some of which are of supraregional importance, which are looked after by local communities and associations. The fact that the Palatinate Forest belongs to the Palatinate Forest-Vosges du Nord biosphere reserve and the associated efforts to protect the significant natural heritage, the red sandstone landscape of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park , the castles in the Dahner Felsenland and the cross-border paths into Alsace and the Vosges are the special attractions of this for hikers Region.

Predicate paths

The Pfalz-Touristik developed in cooperation with the Verband Deutscher Gebirgs- und Wandervereine e. V. (German Hiking Association) the routes for three quality hiking trails that were opened in April 2011 and two of which run in the Palatinate Forest:

Further rated hiking trails were created with the assistance of the German Hiking Institute. There are 9 so-called “premium hiking trails” mainly in the south of the Palatinate Forest. One example is the Felsenland Sagenweg (length approx. 90 km), which leads in 5 to 7 day stages from Dahn to Bruchweiler-Bärenbach through the Dahner Felsenland . Other hikes, on the other hand, were laid out as day tours and circular hikes; The Wasgau Lakes Tour or the Hauensteiner Schusterpfad can serve as examples . All premium trails can be used in both directions.

  • The Rodalber Felsenwanderweg (circular hiking trail, 43.305 km, five daily stages are suggested, whereby the total length including the approach and departure paths increases to 61.9 km) was established by the Palatinate Forest Association and the Rodalben community at the beginning of the 1990s. It meanders through various side valleys around Rodalben and touches 26 bizarre rock formations made of red sandstone typical of the country , including the Bruderfelsen . In 2007 it was recognized as a predicate path by the German Hiking Association.
  • The Brunnenwanderweg near Heltersberg : The Brunnenwanderweg, inaugurated in 2009, is 40.3 km long and runs in 64 themed stations around the community of Heltersberg. The 30 or so wells, newly renovated in voluntary work, form the focus of the path; Further features are near-natural, lonely mixed forests and bizarre rock formations (cliffs and block fields). The cultural and historical background of the path is documented in detailed information boards and an accompanying brochure.
  • Other themed hiking trails are the Palatinate Keschdeweg , the Triftwanderweg Elmstein , the Busenberger Holzschuhpfad , the Dahner Felsenpfad , the Elwetritsche educational trail and the Elwetritsche hiking trail

Local hiking trails

Many local parishes and association communities in the Palatinate Forest have designated local hiking trails. The circular hiking trails, which are usually marked with numbers, are mainly used by the locals over short to medium distances. The maintenance of these circular hiking trails (trail markings, clearing) has been neglected in some cases due to weak demand and low budget, so some of them can only be found with the help of topographic maps .

Common marking systems

Since the Palatinate Forest Association and the Vosges Club (French: Club Vosgien ) were founded over 100 years ago, both hiking associations have used almost identical marking systems. As a result, not only can cross-border hikes be carried out without any problems, but also the fact that the Palatinate Forest and Vosges form a unit from a geomorphological and topographical point of view, i.e. can only be viewed as parts of a higher-ranking mountain range on the left bank of the Rhine.
