history

Ritterstein No. 246:
road embankment, Speyer – Metz route

The knight's stone no. 246 in front of the hut with the engraved inscription road embankment route Speyer - Metz indicates that during the Roman Empire and in the Middle Ages the Roman road or old road ran over the mountain saddle.

On New Year's Eve 1960/61, the Kimmel gang from the region set fire to the Totenkopfhütte, which at that time had neither water nor electricity and also had no effective heating, and it was badly damaged. Afterwards only poorly renovated, the hut was taken over as a club house in 1966 by the Maikammer local group of the Palatinate Forest Association.

The association carried out the first fundamental alterations and expansions from 1967 to 1969. In 1970 an extension with a large dining area was built, and later there were further construction work and renovations. The masonry building ensemble today consists of a two-story main building with two one-and-a-half-story extensions.
