Location of the local community of Kleinkarlbach in the Bad Dürkheim district | ||
Kleinkarlbach is a municipality in the Palatinate district of Bad Dürkheim . The place is about 18 km west of Ludwigshafen am Rhein on the edge of the European metropolitan region Rhine-Neckar and belongs to the community of Leiningerland .
Geography and geology
Kleinkarlbach is a wine-growing town in the Vorderpfalz on the hilly western edge of the Upper Rhine Plain . The community is located at the entrance of the Leininger valley on the Eckbach , which flows east to the Rhine and receives the Krumbach from the right at the exit . The name-related Großkarlbach is 5 km further east in the Rhine valley.
Geologically, the area is the interface between the low mountain range of the Palatinate Forest , which runs out here to the northeast, and the deep rift valley of the Rhine Valley. Kleinkarlbach sits exactly at the end of this peripheral mountain range - the Leininger Sporn - just above the Grünstädter and Eisenberg basins in the north. On the eastern slope of this spur runs the fault line where the former floor of the Upper Rhine Rift Valley sank over 10 km and was filled with younger sediments to the present level. Some of these loose rocks are also used for viticulture on the slopes.
history
Kleinkarlbach was first mentioned in a document in 770 in the Lorsch Codex . In 873 the place belonged to the Murbach monastery . In 1309 it went to the Counts of Leiningen as a fief . After the French Revolution it belonged to the Département du Mont-Tonnerre . From 1814 to 1816, Kleinkarlbach was under joint Austrian-Bavarian administration before it was added to the Kingdom of Bavaria as part of the Rhine District .
Until 1969, Kleinkarlbach belonged to the (then extinct) district of Frankenthal (Palatinate) .
religion
In 1555 the Reformation was introduced in the Leiningerland , and Kleinkarlbach became Lutheran . In 2007, 52.9 percent of the population were Protestant and 23.8 percent Catholic. The rest belonged to another religion or were non-denominational.
Attractions
Kleinkarlbach is located on the Eckbach-Mühlenwanderweg , which connects 23 of the former 35 watermills on this body of water . Six of the original seven still exist in the village:
- Fulling Mill

The mill researcher Wolfgang Niederhöfer from Kleinkarlbach achieved the opening of the path in 1997 by the then Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Kurt Beck .
