Weisenheim am Sand is a municipality in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Bad Dürkheim . It belongs to the Freinsheim association (just like the Weisenheim am Berg, which should not be confused with it ). Weisenheim am Sand is the largest in terms of area - and in terms of population the second largest municipality within the association.

Geographical location

Weisenheim am Sand is located in the Upper Palatinate Rhine plain . The Fuchsbach (also called Kesserbach) flows through Weisenheim, flowing into the Isenach in Frankenthal before most of its water was diverted into the Schrakelbach , a tributary of the Eckbach . The neighboring recreation area "Ludwigshain", which the locals call "Keschdeberg" (Kastanienberg), belongs to the village.

The hamlets of Eyersheimer Hof and Eyersheimer Mühle , remnants of the village of Eyersheim, which disappeared in the Middle Ages, lie on the banks of the Isenach on the southern boundary of the district .

The area around Weisenheim is counted among the mildest regions in Germany and is particularly suitable for growing wine and fruit .

history

The place was first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex in 771 . During the time of the tribal duchies, the place was in the Duchy of Franconia .

Friedrich Schiller obtained his silver sand from Weisenheim to dry the ink.

Municipal council

The municipal council in Weisenheim consists of 20 council members, who were elected in a personalized proportional representation in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Mayor and alderman

In the 2019 local elections, Michael Bähr (CDU) was directly elected mayor with 60.4 percent of the vote . He replaced Heinz-Werner Süss (FWG), who no longer ran for election, in this office.

In addition to the local mayor, there are 3 councilors: Klaus Mathis (FWG), Friedrich Hofmann (FDP), Holger Koob (CDU).

Education, sport and leisure

Weisenheim has three kindergartens and one elementary school (all-day school) with four years of two classes each. The community gym belongs to the school. The community library has meanwhile moved from the town hall to the basement of the primary school.

The largest sports club is SV Weisenheim am Sand. Other sports clubs are the ASV Weisenheim am Sand, the Ludwigshain Tennis Club (TCL) and the Weisenheim am Sand shooting club. Other associations include the Weisenheim riding and driving association, the support association of the volunteer fire brigade, a local group of scouts, the local history and museum association and several carnival groups. Every year on Shrove Sunday, the Weisenheim Carnival Parade takes place, which is called Rieslingwurm and attracts tens of thousands of visitors. The annual "squeeze festival" at the end of August with an approx. 5 km long circular hiking trail and the "romantic forest Christmas" on the 3rd weekend in Advent are also well known beyond the town limits.

  • Werner Föckler (* 1945), former soccer referee , lives in the village.
  • Ralf Konietzka (* 1960), soccer player, played in the local soccer club and was later a youth coach there.
