Location of the local community Ellerstadt in the Bad Dürkheim district | ||
Ellerstadt is a municipality in the Bad Dürkheim district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Wachenheim an der Weinstrasse .
geography
Ellerstadt is located in the Upper Rhine Plain in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region . Neighboring communities are Birkenheide , Fußgönheim , Gönnheim and Bad Dürkheim . The acacia settlement belonging to Ellerstadt is located in the north of the main town directly adjacent to the residential development of the community of Birkenheide.
history
The area around Ellerstadt was already settled in Roman times, as evidenced by three stone Roman coffins with glasses and urns that were found on the southern edge in 1822. Ellerstadt was probably a Franconian settlement as early as the 5th century . The first documentary mention of Ellerstadt was on December 19, 783 in the Lorsch Codex . The donation of part of the village "Alaridestath" to the Lorsch monastery is documented . Other donations from Ellerstadt are documented in the years 863, 873, 908/909 to Lorsch and 985 to the Weißenburg monastery in Lower Alsace . For the year 1190, Palatine rights in Ellerstadt from the possession of the former Weißenburg monastery and the bailiwick over the Lorsch monastery can be proven.
The lords of Flersheim, who came into the possession of Ellerstadt estates from 1482, became more important. In 1548 the Flersheimers owned two thirds of the village and the Lords of Affenstein the other third. In 1570 Friedrich von Flersheim obtained permission from Emperor Maximilian II to hold a horse and cattle market every year on May 1st and November 19th. The Flersheimers not only had the market supervision with all the associated rights, but also the neck court and the blood spell. Its wisdom from 1555, for the community the oldest document of the jurisprudence in disputes and criminal matters of its residents, was repeatedly read out in public. After the Flersheimers had become the sole local lords in 1577 through compensation from the Affensteiner, they died out in 1655. 1707 Ellerstadt belonged to Casimir Kolb von Wartenberg and was part of the imperial county, which had imperial character. The impoverished Wartenbergers finally sold their rights to the Counts of Sickingen in 1789 .
In 1793/94 the revolutionary troops of the French Republic looted the community and used the inhabitants to do serf labor. The confiscation of all aristocratic property on the left bank of the Rhine also affected the Count of Sickingen. There were no longer any large landowners or serf farmers. After the defeat of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna , the Palatinate was incorporated into the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 . Ellerstadt now belonged to the Land Commissioner Neustadt and the judicial district of Frankenthal .
In 1939 the Neustadt district office became the Neustadt district . Since the administrative reform at the beginning of 1969, Ellerstadt has belonged to the Wachenheim community, and since the dissolution of the Neustadt district, Ellerstadt has belonged to the Bad Dürkheim district.
Population development
In 1548 24 to 30 families lived here and in 1614 there were already 60 to 70; In 1722 there was not a single house on the road through which the Rhein-Haardt Railway runs today; In 1910 there are 767.
The strong growth of the last decades is due not least to the Rhein-Haardt-Bahn. In the twenties, the thousand mark was exceeded. In 1970 1,400 residents were registered. In 1980 the number was 2,000 and once the planned new development areas have been completed, the population will level off at around 2,500.

Economy and Infrastructure
The agricultural community lives mainly from viticulture and to a lesser extent from fruit growing. Some of the residents work for BASF in nearby Ludwigshafen am Rhein .
Viticulture has played a role for Ellerstadt since the 8th century, as the Lorsch deed of donation shows. Since 1886, mainly Portuguese vines have been planted in the Ellerstadt district. The “Gewürztraminer”, which even Bismarck obtained from Ellerstadt, usually only produces poor yields and is therefore only found sporadically, although the soils in the community are particularly suitable. The Weingut Markus Schneider is now the best-known beyond the region winery of the village. The focus of quality is on the red wine sector.
In 1903, the agricultural area of the municipality (634 ha) accounted for 117 ha for viticulture, 357 for arable and garden areas and 70 ha for "forests and woodlands". Fruit growing had played an important role until the last decade; Peach cultivation since 1867.
The peach variety " Roter Ellerstädter " (also: Kernechter vom Vorgebirge and Vorgebirgspeachich ) is known beyond the region . The variety was found around 1870 by the winemaker Georg Fitz from Ellerstadt as a chance seedling in a group of peach seedlings that emerged from the seeds of a freely withered tree.
Since 1925, more and more sour cherries have been grown.
