history
Surname
Altleiningen, originally Leiningen , was first mentioned in a document in 780 in the Lorsch Codex on the occasion of a donation to the Lorsch Monastery . The donation concerned a forest area “in linunga marca” (on the leininger district). The name referred to the linseed tree, a name that was used in the area at the time for both the Norway maple and the summer linden tree . Because both tree species were common on its banks, the Eckbach was called Leinbach at that time . The noble lineage of the Leininger is derived from this, who owned the Leiningerland for centuries and had a linden tree in their coat of arms.
timeline
Since the Middle Ages , Altleiningen has belonged to the Counts of Leiningen , whose ancestral castle lies on a ridge above the village. After the French Revolution had spread to the Electoral Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine at the end of the 18th century , Altleiningen was also temporarily part of the French department of Donnersberg . At this point in time, Altleiningen was already forming a community with its southern neighbor, Höningen.
From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Altleiningen and Höningen were incorporated into the canton of Grünstadt and the seat of their own Mairie. In 1815 the village was added to Austria after the Congress of Vienna . Just one year later, like the entire Palatinate, it moved to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 "Alt-Leiningen" belonged to the Landkommissariat Frankenthal ; from this the district office of Frankenthal emerged.
From 1939 the community was part of the Frankenthal (Palatinate) district . After the Second World War , the place became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , the place moved to the newly created district of Bad Dürkheim . Three years later it became part of the also newly created Verbandsgemeinde Hettenleidelheim . In 2018 the association was assigned to the community of Leiningerland .

religion
In the district of Höningen, about 2 kilometers to the south, there is the Romanesque style Evangelical Church of St. Jacob and the remains of the monastery of Höningen Monastery . The latter include the archway at the northern entrance to the village, the west gable of each of the convent building and the monastery church, both of which are parallel to today's main street. St. Jacob and the monastery were built around 1120. Two letters of protection from Pope Innocent II and Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa reflect the importance of the monastery at the time it was founded.
At the end of 2011, 43 percent of the population were Protestant and 30 percent Catholic. 24 percent were non-denominational and three percent belonged to another religion. The Jewish community, which was once located on site, owned a synagogue from 1834 , which was profaned at the beginning of the 20th century and subsequently demolished.

Culture and sights
Cultural monuments
The altleiningen castle and monastery Höningen are as monument zones reported. Erszere was built on the top of a 400-meter-high mountain that rises above the left bank of the Eckbach. A youth hostel and - in the moat - a heated outdoor pool were integrated into the castle in the 20th century. In the roofed “Ehrenhalle”, a space separated by arcades from the castle courtyard, the Altleiningen Castle Games have been staging challenging plays every summer since 1980 - classic, modern, and often those with historical references.
There are also numerous individual monuments, including the inscription panel of the 20-tube fountain , which is fed from a tunnel that was driven deep into the rock around 1600 to supply the castle above. The Eckbach now draws most of its water from this.
nature
The municipality is located in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park , which in turn belongs to the Palatinate Forest-Vosges du Nord Biosphere Reserve . There are a total of three natural monuments on site .
The location in the Palatinate Forest favors the occurrence of rare animal and plant species. The basement of Altleiningen Castle is used by a large population of the Great Mouse -eared bat to raise their offspring. Rare plants such as the bee orchid and other orchids in the Altleiningen area are among the botanical specialties. The largely intact nature has also given tourism an upswing in recent decades . Popular excursion destinations in the region include the Kamelkopf , the Ungeheuersee , the Rahnfels and the Isenachweiher .
The Ritterstein 284 is located southeast of Höningen. It bears the inscription Julius Schmitt, dedicated to the author of the Wonnegau and refers to a functionary of the Palatinate Forest Association .
