The Isenachweiher in the Palatinate Forest ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a reservoir of the Isenach , a left tributary of the Rhine . Such reservoirs are called Woog in the region .

geography

Geographical location

The Isenachweiher is located in the north-eastern Palatinate Forest 200 meters north of the federal highway 37 , which leads from the district town of Bad Dürkheim to Frankenstein . It belongs to the forest area of Bad Dürkheim, whose residential area is about ten kilometers away.

Dimensions

The entire Isenachweiher measures 17,850 m² and is about twice the size of a soccer field. What the viewer perceives as the actual lake area extends above the dam at a width of around 50 meters a good 100 meters to the north. In this area the pond is a maximum of eight meters deep. The rest of the lake area appears as a broadening of the river to about 20 meters, which begins several hundred meters before the Isenachweiher.

Surroundings

Forsthaus zur Isenach

On the dam on the south bank of the pond there was once a keeper's house. It was used as a forester's lodge at the beginning of the 20th century and as an excursion restaurant from the 1930s. In November 1983 the house burned down to the ground. From 1990 a large log cabin made of wood was built in two stages as an inn with beer garden , which is called Forsthaus zur Isenach . Rowing boats can also be rented there for trips on the pond. There is an unpaved parking lot on the dam directly in front of the house, another on the B 37 at the junction of the driveway.

history

In the narrow side valley, the Isenach was dammed about five kilometers below its source in 1736/37 in order to ensure that the river flows evenly. This was necessary because the pumps of the Bad Dürkheim graduation house, also built in 1736, were operated with hydropower until 1850, which was obtained from the Isenach. In addition, the Woog ensured the supply of a mill wheel below the dam. In 1810 and 1935/36 major maintenance work was carried out; on the second occasion, the pond was cleared of silt and with the excavation the thickness of the dam was doubled from 35 to 70 meters. The dam was repaired and restored in the mid-1980s and for the last time between autumn 2008 and spring 2009; The city of Bad Dürkheim estimated the cost of the last renovation at 400,000 euros. This work was mainly necessary because of unexplained water losses (initially 25 liters per second in 2009), which do not occur as a result of the construction technology used - it is a dam through which there is a flow , but is attributed to invisible lateral drainage.

Flora and fauna

The Isenachweiher is transparent down to the bottom, because because of the steeply sloping banks, shaded by tall trees, only a few aquatic plants can flourish and cause clouding. Despite the poor aquatic flora, there is a considerable variety of fish , and crabs , frogs , newts and aquatic insects such as the yellow cockerel beetle and the great water beetle can also be observed. Numerous species of birds nest in the area. These include the rare dipper chasing in the stone cascade of Seeablaufs; in Germany this songbird is listed as threatened on the red list of endangered species . Among the flying insects , the banded demoiselle is particularly striking , with a wingspan of 6.5 to 7 cm. In order to maintain the ecological balance , swimming or fishing in the lake as well as spreading fish or bird feed is prohibited.
