About this picture

Herxheim am Berg is a municipality in the Bad Dürkheim district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Freinsheim Association .

Geographical location

The community is located in the Palatinate on the German Wine Route .

The district is divided into three parts. The town of Herxheim am Berg, together with the surrounding fields and vineyards, forms the focus of the community; to the west of the Palatinate Forest are two forest exclaves - south of Hertlingshausen and on the Weilerskopf - that were used in the division of the large or Freinsheim inheritance from the communities of Freinsheim , Herxheim , which can be proven from 1400 onwards am Berg, Kallstadt , Leistadt and Weisenheim am Sand were awarded to the municipality in 1820.

The Felsenberg-Berntal nature reserve with the Herxheimer Karst cave , a natural monument known for archaeological and biological finds, is located southwest of the village in the rupture zone of the Upper Rhine Graben .

Neighboring communities are - clockwise - Dackenheim , Freinsheim , Kallstadt , Bad Dürkheim and Weisenheim am Berg .

history

The place was founded during the Frankish conquest . A Merovingian cemetery from the 5th to 8th centuries can be found southwest of the village . In 774 the place was first mentioned as Heriesheim in a property register of the Weißenburg monastery , which owned an estate and vineyards here. The Weißenburg monastery gave the village as a fief to the Counts of Leiningen , with whom it remained until 1793. Other ecclesiastical landowners in Herxheim were, among others, the Höningen Monastery (from 1209 verifiable), which from 1241 also had patronage rights over the church, the Werschweiler Monastery (from 1371) and the Teutonic Order (from 1414).

In 1461, the recently fortified village was in a feud between Elector Friedrich I and Count Emich III. destroyed by Leiningen-Hardenburg. The reconstruction took place as "Herxheim am Sand" east of the previous place and below the slope edge. The new settlement was soon abandoned and the place was rebuilt on the original site. The place was burned down again in the Thirty Years War .

From the late 17th century, the von Reineck family acquired extensive property in the village and became the largest landowner. She sold her property to the Speyer cathedral chapter in 1788 . Until the end of the 18th century, the community belonged to the Speyer and Leiningen-Dagsburg monastery .

After the French Revolution , Herxheim am Berg was occupied by French troops for the first time on May 10, 1794. With the establishment of the Département du Mont-Tonnerre in 1798, it was assigned to the canton of Dürkheim in the Arrondissement of Speyer and was subordinate to the Mairie Weissenheim . All ecclesiastical possessions were nationalized and auctioned off as national property. In 1815 the place had a total of 499 inhabitants. After the Congress of Vienna , which took place in the same year, the place was added to Austria . Just one year later, the place, like the entire Palatinate, changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 the community belonged to the Landkommissariat Neustadt ; from this the district office of Neustadt emerged.

In 1902 Herxheim moved to the newly created district office of Dürkheim , before this was reintegrated into its Neustadt counterpart in 1931. From 1939 the place was part of the district of Neustadt . After the Second World War , the municipality within the French occupation zone became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , the place changed on June 7, 1969 to the newly created district of Bad Dürkheim . Three years later it was assigned to the also newly formed community of Freinsheim .

In 2017 and 2018, the community fell due to the continued use of an Adolf Hitler dedicated and with a swastika marked bell from the period of National Socialism nationwide in the headlines.

Attractions

The landmark of the place is the approximately 1000 year old Evangelical St. James Church . The Romanesque choir tower in the basement and the adjoining apse are decorated with Secco paintings from the 14th century. The baroque nave from 1729 was destroyed by fire in 1934 and then reconstructed. In the church tower there is a police bell, also from 1934, which is dedicated to Adolf Hitler and has a swastika and attracted nationwide attention due to its continued use until 2017. As the owner of the bell, the local council decided in March 2018 that the bell should remain in the church tower as a “memorial against violence and injustice” and should be rung again. The presbytery of the parish , which owns the building and the right to ring , decided shortly thereafter that the bell would not be rung until further notice. Before making a final decision about the use and whereabouts of the bell, it should be checked who is the owner of the church tower . In October 2018, the Neustadt an der Weinstrasse administrative court dismissed a lawsuit in which a Holocaust survivor had demanded that the bell be removed.

The palace garden north of the church was the location of the Rheineckschen Schlösschen, which was demolished after the French Revolution. The park with its protected stock of trees is known as the “balcony of the Palatinate” because of the view over the Rhine plain.

Near the church is the Pfaffenhof , whose listed wine cellar from the 18th century is still in use today. The Pfaffenhof, first mentioned in 1209, was originally owned by the Höningen Monastery , from which it passed to the Counts of Leiningen . From 1788 the Speyer Cathedral Chapter owned the farm. After the French Revolution, the property was sold to private individuals as a national property .

The northern end of the street Pfaffenhof forms the Pfaffenhoftor from the 17th or 18th century, one of the few remaining baroque town gates in the Palatinate. The painter Werner Holz had his studio in the neighboring Spitzhäuschen .

The former feudal courtyard of the Counts of Leiningen, whose late Baroque main house was built in 1719, is located in the main street. On the property, which was united with the neighboring Werschweiler monastery property in 1724, there is a sandstone guard house, which probably comes from Dürkheim Castle .

Infrastructure

telecommunications

In 1969, the Deutsche Bundespost erected a 130-meter-high telecommunications tower made of reinforced concrete on the Weilerskopf . Today, Deutsche Telekom only uses the type tower for mobile and directional radio.

economy

Herxheim am Berg is a wine-growing town and as such part of the Palatinate wine-growing region . The individual layers Himmelreich, Honigsack and Kirchenstück are located on site .

traffic

The federal road 271 from Neustadt to Alzey runs through Herxheim am Berg in a north-south direction , which in this area is identical to the German Wine Road and the state road 522 in an east-west direction.

About one kilometer southeast of the local community is the Herxheim am Berg train stop on the Palatinate Northern Railway , which was only established in the course of the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle ; In return, the local community renounced the previous bus service. There are trains every hour on the Neustadt – Grünstadt and Frankenthal – Ramsen routes; the latter are tied through to the Eiswoog on Sundays and public holidays . Two trains per direction and hour serve the stop.
