history

Niederkirchen was first mentioned in 699 as Didinnes-chaime in a document from the Weissenburg monastery . The first documentary evidence of local viticulture comes from a document from the Fulda Monastery , dated to the year 770. During the time of the tribal duchies, the place belonged to the Duchy of Franconia . With the Romanesque church building begun in 1060 with its striking church tower, Niederkirchen received its landmark that still exists today. In the course of the 11th century the place came into the possession of the prince-bishops of Speyer , with whom it remained until the end of the 18th century and within them was subordinate to the Deidesheim office . Presumably in the 13th century, today's Deidesheim split off from the mother town , whereupon the name of the place developed from Unterdeidesheim to Niederdeidesheim in the late Middle Ages to Niederkirchen . In the Thirty Years War , the place died out almost completely.

After the occupation of the areas on the left bank of the Rhine in the First Coalition War (1794), Niederkirchen became part of the French Republic in 1798 and, from 1804, of the Napoleonic Empire . During this time, the place was assigned to the canton of Dürkheim in the Département du Mont-Tonnerre and was subordinate to the Mairie Deidesheim . In 1815 Niederkirchen had 850 inhabitants.

Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna , the region first came to Austria in 1815 and to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 on the basis of a state treaty ; Niederkirchen belonged to the newly created Rhine district . As a result, Niederkirchen was initially merged with Deidesheim to form one municipality before this was reversed in 1819. From 1818 to 1862 the community belonged to the Landkommissariat Neustadt ; from this the district office of Neustadt emerged.

In 1902 the place changed to the newly created district office of Dürkheim , before it was reintegrated into its Neustadt counterpart in 1931. From 1939 the place was part of the district of Neustadt .

After the Second World War , the place became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . As part of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , Niederkirchen moved to the newly created Bad Dürkheim district in 1969 . Three years later, the community became part of the also newly formed Deidesheim Association .

religion

During the Middle Ages, the community first formed a parish, which was moved to Deidesheim in the 15th century. Later, with St. Martin on site, a new parish of its own was created, before it was added to the newly created parish of St. Michael with its seat in Deidesheim on January 1, 2016 . At the end of 2017, 62.6 percent of the population were Catholic and 19.1 percent were non-denominational. 16.9 percent were Protestant and 1.4 percent belonged to another religion.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Niederkirchen near Deidesheim
Blazon : "In red a hovering, etched golden cross, angled at thetop left and bottom right by a six-pointed silver star."
Establishment of the coat of arms: After Niederdeidesheim became independent in 1819, the municipality initially continued the local coat of arms of Deidesheim without referring to an old court seal of Niederkirchens, which represented two crossed swords, each angled by a star at the top and side. Unaware of this seal, the Reichsherold ordered a change in the Deidesheim coat of arms in terms of the choice of color and the placement of the stars.

On May 15, 1845, King Ludwig I of Bavaria approved the coat of arms with the blazon, now for Niederkirchen: "In red a floating blue cross, with a six-pointed silver star at the top left and bottom right."

With the approval of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior on December 17, 1927, the colors were corrected in heraldry, with a golden cross.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Parish Church of St. Martin

The Catholic parish church of St. Martin is one of the oldest Christian architectural monuments in the Palatinate . The church was first mentioned in a document in 1235, but building evidence suggests that its striking Romanesque crossing tower dates from the second half of the 11th century. The choir of the church probably dates from around 1300, the nave was added in 1955/56. The “ crossing ” originally had the function of a choir room; the Romanesque church was thus a choir tower , a widespread type of medieval country church.

As one of the few surviving village churches from the 11th century in the Palatinate and because of its close proximity to the stylistically similar monastery church of Limburg near Bad Dürkheim and the Speyer Cathedral , the Niederkirchen parish church is of particular art-historical importance.
