About this picture

Obrigheim (Pfalz) is a municipality in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Bad Dürkheim and is located in the north-west of the European metropolitan region of Rhine-Neckar . It belongs to the community of Leiningerland .

geography

Obrigheim is located in the extreme northeast of the Bad Dürkheim district, right on the border between the Palatinate and Rheinhessen . The main town and its smaller districts are lined up from southwest to northeast on the central Eisbach , where the hilly landscape gradually merges into the Rhine plain . Albsheim to the right and Mühlheim to the left of the watercourse follow one after the other for about 5 km , then Heidesheim and Colgenstein to the right and finally the main town of Obrigheim and the Neuoffstein factory on the left. In addition to the districts mentioned, the residential areas Krausmühle and Schloßmühle also belong to the community.

Neighboring towns are clockwise and starting in the north Bockenheim , Offstein , Obersülzen and the city of Grünstadt .

history

The main town has been known since around 1250 and was probably owned by the Counts of Leiningen at that time . The ending heim indicates Franconian origin, but there is no written evidence for this. A local nobleman named Ulricus de Obernkeim was mentioned in a decree of the council of the imperial city of Speyer in 1352 ; he could have come from Obrigheim.

The Weissenburg Abbey belehnte 1390 Count Friedrich VII. Von Leiningen-Dagsburg of goods in Obrigheim, see also Leiningen-Heidenheim .

From 1467 to 1505 the place was owned by the Electoral Palatinate . In 1557 it was called Oberkum uff der Wissen , this almost coincides with today's dialect name Owwerkumm . On a map from 1735 the village was called Oberheim , and in 1739 the place name commonly used today appeared for the first time.

Today's districts were mostly mentioned earlier: Mühlheim in 761, Albsheim 788, Colgenstein around 1000, Heidesheim 1277. Above Mühlheim, where the Eisbach still has a steep slope and cut deep into the terrain, there used to be at least two mills . Another, which worked as a sawmill , was on the flatter terrain in what is now Neuoffstein. The castle of the Count's House of Leiningen-Heidesheim was burned down in 1794 by troops from the French Revolution .

On June 7, 1969, today's community of Obrigheim (Palatinate) was re-formed from the previously independent communities of Albsheim an der Eis (then 489 inhabitants), Colgenstein-Heidesheim (724), Mühlheim an der Eis (283) and Obrigheim (1068) . At the same time, the district membership changed, as the previous district of Frankenthal (Palatinate) was dissolved. In 1972 the community was assigned to the then newly formed community of Grünstadt-Land , which was merged into the community of Leiningerland in 2018.

religion

At the end of 2014, 51.9% of the population were Protestant and 17.5% Catholic. The rest belonged to another religion or were non-denominational. The Protestant residents of the community belong to the Protestant Church of the Palatinate , the Catholics to the Speyer diocese .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Obrigheim
Blazon : "Divided by blue and gold, above a red armored silver eagle, holding a horizontally placed golden key in its claws, below a defying, leaping red doe pierced at the neck by a red arrow."

It was approved by the Neustadt district government in 1970 .

Reasons for the coat of arms: The doe comes from the old coat of arms of Obrigheim and the Leininger eagle comes from the coats of arms of Albsheim, Colgenstein-Heidesheim and Mühlheim. The key symbolizes the Weissenburg Monastery.

Attractions

Of the five churches in Obrigheim, the four today are of Protestant architectural significance.

Albsheim an der Eis - The Protestant Church Albsheim (formerly St. Stephan) is one of the most important Romanesque church buildings in the Palatinate. In many village churches that belonged to the diocese of Worms in the Middle Ages, a tower shape emerged in the 11th century, the outer structure of which enlivened not only walls, but cornices, arched friezes, pilaster strips and blind arcades. With the choir tower of the Peterskirche in Kirchheimbolanden from the 12th century and the demolished tower of Eisenberg, the 50 m high Albsheimer tower (after 1150) also belongs to the type in which cornices with arched friezes extend from corner and central bars and the tower on top of all Divide pages into equal fields. Despite the separation by the cornices, the central stave continues on the other floors. The choir was given a vault in 1520 and the large east window was added in 1749. Here is the oldest organ in the Palatinate that is still being played ; It was created in 1730 by Johann Valentin Senn from Seebach, which is now part of Bad Dürkheim .

Colgenstein - The first Colgenstein church was mentioned in the " Codex Edelini " for the year 985. In the so-called Salian church robbery , this basilica and the associated court property fell to Duke Otto I. The tower from the 12th century is still preserved from the Romanesque successor building; the pairs of windows grouped one above the other on its four storeys are reminiscent of those of the Speyer Cathedral , and the oldest bell in the Palatinate probably rings here. A late Gothic font dates from 1509.

Mühlheim - The Mühlheim church was built by Count Jofried von Leiningen-Hardenburg in the 1330s. At the beginning of the 17th century the House of Leiningen-Heidesheim had it converted into a castle church, with the burial place of the count's family in the choir . The organ, built by Johann Michael Stumm in 1738 , is the best preserved Stumm organ in the Palatinate.

Obrigheim - The church of Obrigheim was originally a chapel of St. Giles, a branch of the parish of Colgenstein. The tower from around 1500 still stands from the old chapel. The church was rebuilt in 1865, and in 1910 an additional floor was added to the tower.
