Johann Michael Stumm (born April 10, 1683 in Sulzbach ; † April 22, 1747 ) was a German master organ builder in the 18th century .

life and work

Johann Michael Stumm was born on April 10, 1683 as the sixth child of the blacksmith Christian Stumm († 1719) in Sulzbach. According to tradition, he first completed an apprenticeship as a goldsmith. After winning a small house organ in a lottery that was in need of repair, Johann Michael Stumm turned to organ building. It is unclear with whom he spent his apprenticeship years as an organ builder and who significantly influenced him. Jacob Irrlacher, Johann Hoffmann, Johann Jakob Dahm and Otto Reinhard Mezenius, for example, come into question, but none of them has yet been proven to be Stumms' teacher. He was first referred to as a master in the contract for the organ in Münstermaifeld in 1722. His work style is heavily influenced by the French school of the time.

His instruments gradually gained an outstanding reputation, first in the Hunsrück, then in the Rhineland and finally far beyond. Twenty organs from him have been wholly or partially preserved.

His last organ, which Johann Michael Stumm built as a gift to his home parish, was restored in an exemplary manner in 1981. A silent organ association in Sulzbach cherishes the memory of the great master.

Johann Michael Stumm married Eulalia Gertraude Laux in Sulzbach in 1706, where he settled in 1714. The two were given two daughters and six sons, three of whom became organ builders themselves and continued their father's business. In doing so, he founded the Stumm family of organ builders , who continued the Stumm workshops for seven generations and created over 370 church organs, of which around 140 have been preserved. Many of them are considered to be musical and art-historical highlights.

His brother Johann Nikolaus was the founder of the mining entrepreneur family Stumm .
