Asselheim is a district of Grünstadt in the Bad Dürkheim district in Rhineland-Palatinate . Until 1969 it was an independent community.

Geographical location

Asselheim is located at the western section of the Eisbach valley . With a rocky reef and dry grassland and a 350-year-old elm and 120-year-old winter linden tree, there are a total of two natural monuments on site .

history

middle Ages

Asselheim was first mentioned in a document on May 7, 767 in the Lorsch Codex . This document documents the donation of a vineyard by Hildwin and Reginfrid in Azzulunheim to the Lorsch monastery .

It can be regarded as certain that today's district of Asselheim is much older. Finds by nomadic hunters from the Paleolithic and Mesolithic testify this. A little to the west of today's town center, which in earlier times was more clearly located between St. Elisabeth's Church and the so-called "Hüwwel", a major excavation was carried out in 1954 in the district of "Kieskaut", in which post holes and wall sections of houses or buildings. Huts from a Mesolithic settlement from 2000 to 1800 BC To be exposed.

Other finds from the 4th century BC BC as well as from the Hallstatt and Franconian times up to the Roman times with the Heerweg or the Roman Road prove that Asselheim, with its strategically important location at the western exit to the Rhine plain, was obviously always settled. However, when the district was fortified with defensive towers cannot be proven today. Even if maps from the 16th and 17th centuries repeatedly depict the place as being surrounded by defensive walls, the author has not been able to provide historically reliable evidence of this.

Two towers of the fortification are still preserved today, the four-storey tower with the Protestant St. Elisabeth Church and the Red Tower. For the period from around 700 AD to 1200 AD, historical evidence of life in the place is rare. It can be assumed that this took place in a similar path as in the surrounding areas.

Asselheim has been a court of law since the 11th century. It is known from a valid enactment from 1488 that the court seal used here denotes the holy patron saint “St. Stephan ”shows. However, he does not carry the usual stones, but a bird on his raised right hand, apparently a magpie (Palatine Atzel). For many centuries, this representation was wrongly used as an explanation for the naming of the place: Atzelheim = Asselheim.

The place name appears in documents of the Weißenburg monastery (Weißenburg fiefdom ) around 1200 . In the period that followed, the nearby Rosenthal monastery owned goods on site. In addition, Asselheim and eight other communities belonged to the so-called Neunmärkern , which were allowed to supply themselves with timber in the stump forest around ten kilometers southwest.

Modern times

Asselheim became Protestant in 1555. Around this time of the Reformation , parts of the place fell to Nassau-Weilburg , others to Leiningen-Westerburg and remained there until the French Revolution . The Thirty Years' War , with the subsequent plague , must have brought about a drastic change for Asselheim. Only eight families survived this time. Five of the names have been preserved. These are: Hafner, Nehb, Bredel, Thomann and Brauer.

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Asselheim was incorporated into the canton of Grünstadt and was the seat of its own mairie , which also included Mertesheim . In 1815 the place had 779 inhabitants. In the same year it was added to Austria . Just one year later, the place, like the entire Palatinate, changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . Then Asselheim moved to the Kingdom of Bavaria. During the Bavarian period, the Protestant parish village of Asselheim was still part of the canton of Grünstadt in the so-called Rhine district , as the Palatinate was called at that time. From 1818 to 1862 he was a member of the Frankenthal Land Commissioner ; from this the district office of Frankenthal emerged. In 1840 the place had 100 houses and 750 inhabitants, 50 of them Jews.

From 1939 Asselheim was part of the Frankenthal (Palatinate) district . After the Second World War , the place became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , it was incorporated into the neighboring Grünstadt on June 7, 1969 ; At the same time, with the dissolution of the Frankenthal district, the place changed to the newly created Bad Dürkheim district . Many buildings in the village have been renovated over the past twenty years. The Kappelmühle was renovated, as was the press house, as well as the newly prepared village square and a kindergarten. The Theodor-Heuss-Schule, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007, is located in the district. With the completion of the Auwegiedlung and the Setz, the population increased from 781 to 1285 (as of 2005).

Place name

The name is derived from "Heim (village) der Azila", an old Germanic female given name after Christmann. In the following centuries the name and spelling of the place changed several times. Azulenheim, Azzulunheim, Asselnheim but also Zazilyheim, Assilnheim and others are known. The spelling Asselheim has been common since the 17th century .

Buildings

  • Wine press house - the center of village life is the renovated wine press house , where the local council and village community meetings, various events of the local associations (e.g. the choir) and private celebrations take place.
  • St. Stephen's Chapel - The St. Stephen's Chapel was the first church in Asselheim and was located in the old cemetery, above the village to the north. It belonged to the monastery " St. Maria im Rosendale ", which was founded in 1241 as a Cistercian monastery in the village of Rosenthal (today a district of Kerzenheim ). The chapel was demolished around 1819. Another significance of the affiliation of St. Stephen's Chapel and Nonnenhof to the monastery was for the people of the time that the place was a court of justice for many centuries.
  • St. Elisabeth Church - The St. Elisabeth Chapel was probably built as a chapel in honor of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia shortly after her canonization, around 1300. In 1496 the St. Elisabeth Chapel was raised to the status of a church, and the Wart or Roman tower was converted into a church tower. In 1841 the big bell bursts. In 1864 this accident happened again. During the Second World War , the church was hit by fire bombs and burned to the ground. The reconstruction takes place in the years 1949/50. The bells, renewed in 1951, can be heard to this day.
  • Langgasse and Ostergasse - The Langgasse and Ostergasse are worth seeing. In the Ostergasse, in front of the St. Elisabeth Church, there is a memorial for those who died in the First World War . It is a sandstone stele on which a German soldier kneels, holding a sword in one hand and the Asselheim coat of arms in the other. Name boards for the dead of World War II were also added later . The memorial is the work of the Frankenthal artist Georg Schubert (with signature).
  • Weinwanderhütte - In contrast to the Kerwe, which only takes place once a year, the Weinwanderhütte with a view of the Rhine plain is open every weekend during the summer months. The ten vintners of the wine advertising association serve them alternately with the local associations. In 2006 the outside area of the hut was redesigned, the benches were provided with backrests and the roof of the pergola was renewed.

economy

Roundabout

A suburb of Grünstadt developed from a farming village with predominantly agricultural operations in the late 20th century , which lost part of its rural character. Agricultural businesses in the narrower sense no longer exist. To the north and east of the development there are vineyards that are part of the Palatinate wine-growing region . Thirteen self-marketing wine-growing businesses base their existence on their operating income, although here too the boundaries are fluid and part-time winemakers play a role. Around 70 business registrations have been received, of which nine are craft businesses, 17 trading companies and 43 other businesses. There are currently five motorhome parking spaces opposite the gymnasium with a waste and supply station.

In the long term, construction is to take place in “Battenbühl” and “Hönningen”, and construction has already started in the case of “Battenbühl”.
