Theodor Nauerz , baptized Theodor Joachim Nauerz , (born March 20, 1909 in Otterbach ; † October 1, 2007 in Waldfischbach-Burgalben ) was a priest of the Diocese of Speyer and persecuted by the Nazi regime . He served as pastor of Grünstadt for 27 years .

Life

Theodor Joachim Nauerz was born the son of a railroad worker in Otterbach, West Palatinate. Through his mother, née Brunk, he belonged to the relatives of the then Munich Archbishop and later Cardinal Franz Bettinger . After studying at the Canisianum in Innsbruck , Theodor Nauerz was ordained a priest by Bishop Ludwig Sebastian in Speyer Cathedral on July 9, 1933 .

He then worked as a chaplain in Kirchheimbolanden , St. Ingbert and Blieskastel . After two years of work in youth pastoral care as prefect in the episcopal student home (boarding school) St. Joseph in Speyer, he worked again as a chaplain in Steinfeld and Dudenhofen and as a pastor in Eusserthal and Otterstadt .

Nauerz soon came into conflict with the Nazi regime; A documentary on the resistance of Palatinate priests to National Socialism lists the following facts about him: "1935 investigation proceedings at the Saarbrücken government for refusing to deliver the Hitler salute, 1936 newspaper attacks against him for disregarding a political move in Speyer, from August 9 to August 26, 1940 Pretrial detention for offenses against the treachery law and the like Loss of his pastor's position in Eusserthal, sentenced to 190 RM on 10.1.1941 by the special court Saarbrücken , October 1941 ban on school lessons. "

From 1941 to 1953 Theodor Nauerz officiated as pastor in Gerbach in the north of the Palatinate . On December 1, 1953, he took over the office of pastor of Grünstadt , which he held until December 1, 1980. In addition to the municipality, he was in charge of the Mertesheim branches with their own church, Asselheim with a chapel, and Albsheim and Mühlheim . Under his aegis, the dilapidated buildings of the former Capuchin monastery were renovated and returned to church purposes. The nurses' house and kindergarten were established there. He also had a baroque archway erected, which once belonged to the Jesuit college in Stuhlbrudergasse in Speyer , but had been removed and stored. With his artistic understanding, he kept a lot in the Grünstadt church that fell victim to the taste of the times in other places of worship, including the valuable baroque furnishings. He also successfully defended himself against the planned removal of the historic silent organ . He had the emergency glazing of the church caused by the war replaced with lead glass windows, one of which shows St. Hildegard von Bingen , in memory of his sister Hildegard Nauerz, who contributed a large amount of money.

After his retirement in 1980, Theodor Nauerz moved to Kaiserslautern , where he continued to work in pastoral care as an emeritus . Finally he moved to a retirement home near the pilgrimage site Maria Rosenberg , Waldfischbach-Burgalben . There he celebrated his 70th anniversary in 2003. In the pilgrimage church he celebrated the festival mass himself. Until a few weeks before his death, he held regular services for the roommates in the house chapel. Pastor Theodor Nauerz died in Maria Rosenberg on October 1st, 2007 at the age of 98. He was the oldest priest of the diocese of Speyer and was attended by the former Speyerer diocesan administrator Bishop Otto Georgens buried in the cemetery of his home town Otterbach.

Detailed obituaries appeared in the weekly newspaper Der Pilger and in the pilgrim calendar, while the Rheinpfalz , local part of Grünstadt, published a commemorative article on his 100th birthday.
