Waldfischbach-Burgalben is a municipality in the district of Südwestpfalz in Rhineland-Palatinate , which was created in 1969 by merging the municipalities of Waldfischbach and Burgalben . It is the seat of the association of the same name , to which it also belongs. Measured by the number of inhabitants, it is the third largest local community in the district of Südwestpfalz and the second largest that has no town charter. Waldfischbach-Burgalben is a state-approved tourist destination and designated as a basic center according to state planning .

The community Waldfischbach-Burgalben is located on the western edge of the Palatinate Forest , a sub-region of the Palatinate , between the cities of Kaiserslautern and Pirmasens , in the so-called Palatinate Woodland . The Sickinger Höhe connects to the west . The community consists of the district Burgalben in the south and the Waldfischbach in the north. Neighboring communities are - clockwise - Steinalben , Geiselberg , Heltersberg , Clausen , Donsieders , Höheinöd and Hermersberg .

Waldfischbach
Waldfischbach is mentioned as Vispach in 1182 . After the Thirty Years' War it became extinct and later an insignificant farming village. It shared the history of the wood country .
After the Palatinate was annexed to France as a result of the French Revolution , Waldfischbach became the seat of the canton of Waldfischbach with 21 municipalities. Even under the subsequent Bavarian administration, the status of the canton capital was initially retained and Waldfischbach developed into an economic sub-center.
Castle albums
In 1152 Burgalba was mentioned. At times it belonged to Hessen-Darmstadt with Pirmasens . After the death of Landgrave Ludwig in 1790, Burgalben lost many inhabitants as a result of the dissolution of the Darmstadt garrison . At the beginning of the 19th century, Burgalben became a place for picture dealers who traveled through Germany with images of saints and other naive art. When this was no longer profitable, basket-making flourished , so that even foreign basket-makers moved to Burgalben.

Cultural monuments
The Heidelsburg and the pilgrimage site Maria Rosenberg are designated as monument zones. According to coins found on site, the Heidelsburg was presumably built before 350 AD as a defensive structure; possibly an older Celtic system precedes it. According to various finds - inscription and grave slab - it is the oldest evidence of forest administration in late antiquity on Germanic soil. Only remnants of the curtain wall and the gate made of large sandstone blocks are left of the largely destroyed complex.
The core of the Maria Rosenberg Chapel in Burgalben dates back to the 12th century. The original Romanesque building is extended by a choir from the 13th century and two additional nave axes from the 15th century. A new pilgrimage church with a donor house was built between 1901 and 1912. The pilgrimage site also contains a Lourdes grotto.

A church in Burgalben was first mentioned in 1197. The - meanwhile Protestant - church has a massive brick tower with attached sundial, which comes from the Romanesque building dedicated to Saint Adelfus. The nave dates from 1740.
The two churches in Waldfischbach are more recent. The Protestant church is a neo-Romanesque hall building that was built from 1849 to 1854. Waldfischbach-Burgalben is connected to the national road network via the federal road 270 , which runs from Idar-Oberstein via Kaiserslautern to Pirmasens . The state roads 498 , 499 and 501 as well as the district roads 24 and 32 run through the municipality ; the latter leads to Leimen .
The Biebermühlbahn Kaiserslautern - Pirmasens has been connecting the municipality to the rail network since 1904. Initially, Waldfischbach station formed the northern end point before the line was tied through to Kaiserslautern nine years later. The Burgalben stop was abandoned in the 1980s due to a lack of profitability.
