The Church of St. Joseph is a Roman Catholic parish church in Waldfischbach , municipality of Waldfischbach-Burgalben , district of Südwestpfalz , Rhineland-Palatinate . Saint Joseph is the church patron . The church is a cultural monument of the district of Südwestpfalz under monument protection . Because of its size, the church is also called "West Palatinate Cathedral".
history
The Church of St. Joseph was built in 1929–1930 according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Schulte II ( Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ). It was called St. Joseph on the Mountain to distinguish it from the Church of St. Joseph on Hauptstrasse ( in the valley ) , consecrated in 1863 , which was profaned in 1930.
The previous Catholic church in the town had become too small for the larger population. At a prominent location, on the mountain above the confluence of the Fischbach and Schwarzbach rivers , the parish priest Karl Foltz (1865–1961) , who had been in office since 1907, had the new St. Joseph Church built, for which he had established a church building association as early as 1925 . His sister Franziska Habermann had emigrated to the USA, where she ran a meat factory with her husband and owned a large fortune. On the mediation of her brother, the widowed sister - who had nothing to do with Waldfischbach personally - sent large sums from the USA to build the new church in his parish, and Foltz himself contributed whatever he could with his own money. On July 7, 1929, the foundation stone was laid by Bishop Ludwig Sebastian , who also consecrated the church on August 31, 1930 . At the same time, a new rectory was built on the south side of the choir. In total, Pastor Foltz and his sister had donated almost half a million Reichsmarks for the property, church and rectory. Then both financed the further interior work and the inventory. Prelate Karl Foltz died in 1961 and was given a grave of honor in the baptistery of his church. In addition, the parish had a bronze relief made in the church as a memorial to him and his sister. The political community Waldfischbach-Burgalben named the Prälat-Foltz-Straße after him.
Architecture and equipment
In the church buildings is a romanisierende dreischiffige sandstone - Basilica , wherein the aisles are lower than the nave . A double tower facade with three entrance portals forms the front, next to which a baptistery with a dome is attached to the right . To the nave with eight window axes , a close rotunda on, the in the choir room is.
The interior of the church is characterized by arcades on the left and right side of the central nave, behind which the aisles lie. A Way of the Cross is painted over the arcades , a work by the Munich painter Walter Bertram . The choir, which houses the high altar with tabernacle in a gilded retable , is separated from the nave by three arches , the middle arch resting on pillars . On the back wall of the choir there are wall paintings and the letters Alpha and Omega . Above the central nave there is a flat, wooden coffered ceiling , which is divided by wooden cross beams .
organ
The organ of the church was built in 1960 as opus 700 by the company Gebr. Späth Orgelbau ( Mengen ).
