Clemens Jöckle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clemens Jöckle (born April 15, 1950 in Wasserlos ; † June 2, 2014 in Bad Dürkheim ) was a German art historian . From 2001 to 2012 he was director of the Städtische Galerie Speyer . In July 2012, he was appointed by the Mainz Ministry of Culture to prepare the planned large Wittelsbach exhibition at Villa Ludwigshöhe Castle from the beginning of 2013 . This did not happen because of a severe stroke in autumn 2012, as a result of which he died on June 2, 2014.

Jöckle wrote several art books and wrote an encyclopedia of saints. He wrote numerous monographs and brochures about artists and buildings as well as exhibition catalogs. He edited the Palatinate artists for the general artist lexicon .

Jöckle endeavored to advertise art and artists and to contribute to the understanding of art. When opening exhibitions in and around Speyer, he appeared as a speaker at museums, art associations and galleries. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Speyer Cultural Foundation and chairman of the Palatinate Artists Working Group (apk) .

Head of the Speyer Municipal Gallery

In 2001 Clemens Jöckle was appointed head of the Städtische Galerie Speyer with sole responsibility . After a long political discussion, the gallery was created in a building complex belonging to the city of Speyer, which is located next to the old town hall, which is used as a theater for children and young people and an alternative cinema. Both buildings, located behind the old town hall, together with the Zimmer Theater Speyer and the Winkeldruckerey, also located there, formed the so-called Kulturhof Speyer. The municipal gallery was operated with professional opening times, while many municipal galleries only open daily and then by the hour, and achieved maximum closing times of one week between exhibitions. Jöckle did not want a gallery with a bar, the focus should not be on the encounter with the wine glass, but with art. Between the opening on July 23, 2001 and 2012, almost a hundred exhibitions took place in the gallery, including paintings by painters like Marc Chagall , Henri Matisse and Antonio Saura as well as great Palatinate painters such as Hans Purrmann , Anselm Feuerbach and Max Slevogt . After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Jöckle organized the young Leipzig School's first western exhibition . The gallery's basic program consisted of a large number of themed exhibitions, best-of exhibitions by young artists, anniversary exhibitions and, time and again, the presentation of otherwise inaccessible private collections.
