Municipal Gallery Speyer

The Städtische Galerie Speyer was founded in 2001 by the city of Speyer and is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary art and the organization of exhibitions by deceased artists.

history

The municipal gallery was opened in July 2001 in the gallery building of the Kulturhof Flachsgasse . It is centrally located behind the historic town hall, near the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kaiserdom zu Speyer and in the immediate vicinity of the Judenhof with a mikveh from the 11th century.

The municipal gallery has an exhibition area of ​​300 m² in total, divided into three rooms. Every two years the exhibition of applicants for the Hans Purrmann Prize for Fine Arts of the City of Speyer is organized. A total of six exhibitions take place each year. The Kunstverein Speyer (founded in 1968), located in the same building, offers the possibility of cooperation in which all rooms of the house are used.

By 2012, the Städtische Galerie hosted almost one hundred exhibitions in which paintings by Marc Chagall , Henri Matisse and Antonio Saura as well as Palatine painters such as Hans Purrmann , Anselm Feuerbach and Max Slevogt were shown. After the fall of the Berlin Wall , Clemens Jöckle organized the young Leipzig School's first western exhibition .
