Bernhard Jäger
Bernhard Jäger (born June 17, 1935 in Munich ) is a German painter , graphic artist and sculptor .
Life
After studying biology from 1956 to 1957, he studied at the Werkkunstschule Offenbach from 1957 to 1961 . From 1983 to 1984 he was a visiting professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main , from 1985 he headed their evening school until 2000. In 1990 he was visiting professor at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences .
From 1961 to 1966, Jäger and Thomas Bayrle , with whom he founded the Gulliver Press in 1961 , ran a joint lithography workshop and also made a name for himself as a printer and publisher of artist's books. One of Ernst Jandl's first books (Hosi-Anna !, 1965) appeared in the Gulliver press - illustrated with lithographs by Bayrle and Jäger. In 1970, 1984 and 1994 books illustrated by the artist were awarded the prize “The most beautiful books of the year” by the Stiftung Buchkunst . In 1998 he received an art award from the Heitland Foundation . In 2007 he designed thirty book covers for Jorge Luis Borges ' Die Bibliothek von Babel for the Gutenberg Book Guild .
Jäger lives and works in Frankfurt am Main . He has been a member of the Darmstadt Secession since 1980 .
