Volker Stelzmann
Volker Stelzmann (born November 5, 1940 in Dresden ) is a German painter and graphic artist .
Life
Volker Stelzmann was born as the third child of the Reichsbahn official Kurt Stelzmann and his wife Charlotte Ruth, b. Lambrecht, born. His father died in the war in 1944. Since 1948 he grew up in Leipzig, where he did an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic from 1957 to 1960 after completing secondary school and worked in this profession until 1963. At the same time he attended an evening painting school at the Leipzig School of Graphics and Book Art (HGB) with Walter Münze. From 1963 he studied at the HGB in the specialist class of Gerhard Kurt Müller and graduated in 1968 with a diploma . He completed his basic studies with Fritz Fröhlich , Hans Mayer-Foreyt and Harry Blume . During his studies, he dealt with essays by Michel de Montaigne . In 1966 he had his first personal exhibition in Ahrenshoop together with Ulrich Hachulla and has since been involved in important exhibitions in the GDR and abroad.
From 1968 to 1973 he worked as a freelance artist and sought to deal with works by Pontormo , Rosso Fiorentino , Otto Dix and the New Objectivity . After having made several study trips to the Soviet Union in 1966 , he also visited Bulgaria, Cuba and India during this time. From 1970 to 1986 he was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR , from 1978 to 1986 chairman of its central section management. In the period from 1973 to 1974 he did an aspirantur at the HGB and in 1979 was appointed lecturer and department head of the basic course. In 1982 he got a professorship at the HGB. He continued teaching until 1986.
That year he did not return to the GDR from a trip on the occasion of his exhibitions in Oberhausen and West Berlin. From 1987 to 1988 he was visiting professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and in 1988 he was appointed professor of painting at the Hochschule (later University) of the Arts in Berlin . In protest against this, the painter Georg Baselitz resigned his teaching activities at the university for a long time, since he saw Stelzmann as a "state artist loyal to the line". Stelzmann's teaching ended in 2006.
Volker Stelzmann lives and works in Berlin-Charlottenburg . He has been with Henriette Stelzmann, b. Arndt, married. The artist is represented by DIE GALERIE in Frankfurt am Main and Galerie Poll in Berlin.
