Almancil or Almansil is a Portuguese municipality ( Freguesia ) and small town ( Vila ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Loulé .
history
The earliest finds of human presence in the municipality come from the Paleolithic . The origins of today's place go back to the Moors . The place owes its name, which comes from Arabic , to this fact.
The independent municipality of Almancil was created in 1836 . In 1987 it was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).
Culture and sights
The city is located a few kilometers west of Faro in the so-called Golden Triangle of the Algarve . The exclusive golf and holiday resorts Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo with numerous first-class golf courses are located here. The surrounding landscape is shaped by the western foothills of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa nature reserve . The long sandy beaches are separated from the lagoon behind by extensive dunes.
The church Igreja de São Lourenço on the outskirts of Almancil is worth seeing , the interior of which is completely decorated with motifs made of blue and white tiles ( azulejos ). Next to it is the Centro Cultural de São Lourenço with changing exhibitions of modern visual art and performances by prominent contemporary artists.
