Salir is a municipality and city in the Algarve in Portugal . It belongs to the Loulé district , has an area of ​​187.8 km² and 2775 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011), which corresponds to a population density of 15 inhabitants / km².

history

Celts presumably lived in Salir , but the assumptions are still uncertain. The Romans also settled here, u. a. a furnace is still preserved as one of the relatively few Roman finds in the region. The current place was probably rebuilt in the 12th century under the Almohads . The Arab fortress was probably conquered by King D.Sancho I in 1189 .

Paio Peres Correia settled in Salir to pay homage to King D.Afonso III. to wait, and with him to conquer the Algarve completely in 1251 and thus to conclude the Reconquista in Portugal.

In 1505 , Salir had existed for a long time as an independent community. In 1993 it was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).

economy

In addition to tourism , which is mainly operated as rural tourism and hunting tourism , agriculture is the municipality's most important economic factor. Particular mention should be made of the production of cork , olive oil , almonds , figs , as well as oranges and other fruits. Also of importance are the carob tree and the medronho strawberry tree , which is used to make Medronho fruit schnapps .
