Paio Peres Correia

Paio Peres Correia (in Spain Pelayo Pérez Correa , * 1205 in Monte de Fralães , † February 10, 1275 in Uclés ) was a Portuguese knight.

Correia became Grand Master of the Order of Santiago in 1242 . In the course of the Reconquista , he took large areas of the Algarve from the Moors , including Silves, for his Portuguese King Sancho II .

In the Portuguese civil war of 1246/1247 for the deposition of Sanchos II and the following accession to the throne by Sanchos brother D.Afonso III. Correia supported the new King Afonso III. This then granted the Santiago Order of Correia far-reaching privileges, but the king later took all rights and rights from the order again. a. over Tavira, Cacela and Castro Marim, after he had gained control of the entire Algarve and tried to secure it permanently for the Portuguese crown.

National poet Luís de Camões sang Correia in his main work The Lusiads , especially as the intrepid conqueror of Silves (verse 26, song eight). A number of streets, schools and squares in Portugal are named Paio Peres Correias. The parishes of Paio Pires and Samora Correia are also named after him, and a statue of the knight is placed in Samora Correia.
