history

The place already existed in 1564 . In 1803 Paio Pires became an independent municipality. After the Liberal Revolution of 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg , the district of Seixal was created in 1836 , to which the municipality of Paio Pires belonged administratively since 1835 .

The settlement of smaller industrial companies, especially from 1881 , brought the place some development. With the increased industrialization of the Seixal district, in particular the opening of the Siderurgia Nacional steelworks in 1961 , Paio Pires continued to grow.

As part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal on September 29, 2013, the municipality of Aldeia de Paio Pires was merged with the municipalities of Arrentela and Seixal to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias do Seixal, Arrentela e Aldeia de Paio Pires . Seixal became the headquarters of the new community.

Place name

Aldeia de Paio Pires ( Portuguese for: Village des Paio Pires) refers to Paio Peres Correia . He was Grand Master of the Order of Santiago , to which the local area belonged. A statue for the namesake has been erected in the village.

The place is often just called Paio Pires.
