Life

Johann-Karl Schmidt studied art history, Byzantine studies and architecture in Braunschweig, Freiburg, Vienna and Munich. From 1966 to 1968 he worked as a scholarship holder at the Art History Institute in Florence . In 1969 he received a doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with Wolfgang Braunfels with a dissertation on early Baroque Florentine sculpture. phil. PhD. After working at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum / Museum Ludwig in Cologne and at the Ulmer Museum , in 1978 he became curator at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt for the two departments of modern painting and 20th century art with the Ströher collection and the Beuys block . For Darmstadt he supervised the new building project for the art of the 20th century, for which he built up the collection "Deep Views - Art of the 80s in the Federal Republic of Germany, the GDR, Austria and Switzerland" together with Hans-Jürgen Müller ; it presented for the first time the subversive artist groups of the GDR in West Germany. As foundations, he acquired a Hans Hartung collection and the Dieter Keller / Stuttgart collection. Modern art was permanently anchored in the museum through its acquisition policy. In 1986 he was the curator of Martin Kippenberger's first museum exhibition Rent-Electricity-Gas .

In November 1986 he became director of the Stuttgart City Gallery and founding director of the Stuttgart Art Museum , whose collection he built up with a focus on Otto Dix , Dieter Roth , Markus Lüpertz , Walter Stöhrer , Horst Antes , Dieter Krieg , and which he profiled with exhibitions on contemporary art . For Stuttgart he acquired the Pelikan / Adolf Hölzel and Heinz Teufel collections as well as the commitments from the Otto and Etta Stangl and Gunzenhauser collections. He organized numerous exhibitions on modern and contemporary art and wrote accompanying exhibition catalogs, including on Horst Antes, Willi Baumeister , Lawrence Carroll, Tony Cragg, Otto Dix, Jan Fabre, Duane Hanson, Dieter Krieg, Markus Lüpertz, Tatsuo Miyajima, KRH Sonderborg, Walter Stöhrer, Ben Willikens.

From 1999 he was responsible for the new museum building on Kleiner Schlossplatz. In the course of the planning, this building diverged architecturally, technically, economically and, above all, museologically from his ideas of suitable museum architecture, so that in 2003 he gave up his office and headed the foreign cultural activities of the city of Stuttgart. With him for the same reasons, the collectors Stangl and Gunzenhauser left the city of Stuttgart and founded their own museum projects with his council in Kochel and Chemnitz.

Johann-Karl Schmidt held academic teaching positions at the Berlin University of the Arts and at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts . Since 2007 he has lived in Berlin and Collina d'Oro.
