Josef Doerr (born May 2, 1914 in Speyer ; † November 14, 1999 there ) was a German painter and organist .

Life

education and profession

After attending the humanistic grammar school and the teachers' college in his hometown, Josef Doerr was drafted into the armed forces in 1939 . He fought in various theaters of war and returned home in 1945. From 1947 he worked as a primary and secondary school teacher in various places in the Palatinate , and since 1962 in Speyer. In 1977 he retired. In addition to his work, he was organist in the seminary in Speyer and in the Speyer Cathedral from 1962 until his death in 1999 .

As with many representatives of his generation, Doerr's horizon of experience was shaped by suffering both world wars. In 1948 he turned to painting , which for him had become a constant exploration of color and form until his death. The pictures from his late creative period in particular are exemplary of the “organic-dynamic form structures that seem to easily remove the contrast between abstraction and representationalism” (quote from Manfred Zach ).

Doerr remained true to himself artistically throughout his life. He confidently represented his own consistent style and always painted on the easel . Most of the paintings are works in mixed media, in oil and also in acrylic . Doerr developed shapes that gave his colors a hold, but did not play the first role themselves. The development towards abstraction is very clear . Figures were seldom an issue for him. Vincent van Gogh's art gave him the first impulses for his creative process.

Doerr translated the micro- and macrocosm of nature into round and flowing forms - sometimes filigree ornamental, sometimes extensive, as if it were an enlarged section. Forms did not flow, they did not lose their hold. Rather, he developed dynamism and a powerful charisma with intense and idiosyncratic coloring. Again and again he dissolved color surfaces in an impressionistically vibrating manner. However, he was not considered an impressionist and repeatedly confronted art historians with the problem of classifying him.

Works by Doerr are owned by the city of Speyer and the Middle Rhine Museum in Koblenz , among others .

Private

Doerr was married and has four children. He died in Speyer at the age of 85.
