Cartoons

As a young student, Haitzinger published his first caricatures for the satirical magazine Simplicissimus in 1958, and from then on worked there as a permanent employee. He has been a freelance caricaturist since 1963 and works for the tabloid tz , Nürnberger Nachrichten , Oberösterreichische Nachrichten , Rhein-Zeitung and other daily newspapers and magazines mainly in southern Germany. He also worked for the magazine Bunte for 27 years , and Der Spiegel selected his caricatures for the cover several times.

Haitzinger became known as the “master of the hearty line”, who knows how to caricature the political events of the Federal Republic of Germany accurately and with biting irony in an unmistakable style . At least one cartoon is created every day. So far, over 15,000 drawings have come from his pen.

In 1994 Haitzinger's draft poster for the European elections was rejected by some European parliamentarians because he campaigned for the election with a scantily clad Europe . He is aware that knowledge of mythology , to which the European figure metaphor belongs, is no longer a prerequisite for many readers today.

In December 2013, Haitzinger was voted one of the top 10 anti-Semitic, anti-Israel abuse of 2013 for a cartoon by the Simon Wiesenthal Center published in the Badische Zeitung . The Badische Zeitung rejected the allegation.

Oil paintings

The oil paintings occupy an important place in Horst Haitzinger's life work; The artist was already involved in oil painting at a young age. Even in his early works, the surrealist landscape was the predominant motif.

From 1968 he devoted himself exclusively to political caricature for around five decades. It was not until 2001 that he resumed his deep passion for oil painting. Since then several paintings have been created over many years. His representations from nature are largely based on experiences, impressions and ideas of his youth. They merge in the composition to a journey into a fantastic world.

The works are characterized by formal rigor combined with a rich wealth of details. Dense atmospheric moods are characteristic features of Haitzinger's fantasy world. The openness of meaning in the images and the viewer's freedom of interpretation are important concerns for the artist.

“My pictures are one hundred percent figurative. What people see on it, they can see and interpret as they want. That is in the imagination of every beholder, ”says Haitzinger. “It is my aim to make compositionally good pictures in which movement reacts to countermovement and the relationship between colors is right. The motifs play out in a recurring fairytale world, ”the artist explains his claim.

So far, several large-format oil paintings have been created, which are not for sale as originals and can be seen in exhibitions as loans. For Haitzinger friends and art collectors, six oil paintings were available as high-quality art prints with a certificate in a limited edition.
