Life

Schüler's parents are the bookseller and publisher Gideon Schüler (* 1925 in Eschwege; † 2017 in Friedberg) and the painter and teacher Renate Schüler-Lamert (* 1939 in Niesky; † 2006 in Dortmund). His sister Saskia is also an artist.

After graduating from the Liebigschule Gießen in 1982, pupil studied communication design at the universities of applied sciences in Mainz and Düsseldorf from 1983 to 1985 . From 1985 to 1993 he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Rissa and as a master student with Fritz Schwegler . During his studies, Schüler also performed as a singer, together with Justus Köhncke . In 1996 he received the advancement award for fine arts of the city of Düsseldorf and in 2010 the jury award of the exhibition Miraculum lucis from the Kunstverein Langenfeld . Since 2011, Schüler has been giving lectures on the life and work of Maina-Miriam Munsky , for example in the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar , the Poll Art Foundation , Berlin, the Kunsthalle Gießen or the Berlinische Galerie . After seven years of research, he published a first inventory of the painter in 2013 with the Poll Art Foundation. Since 2013 he has been a member of the advisory board of the Poll Art Foundation. The subject areas of Schüler's representational oil painting are depictions of people and landscapes that make references to German Romanticism . "At its core, the painterly work develops a network of real and imagined elective affinities: it designs a world full of consciously chosen affiliations." Motifs form Rhineland landscapes or portraits from family and friends. In the 1990s, the singer Amanda Lear was repeatedly the model for his paintings.

In 2016, Schüler painted a 21-part series of pictures, Black Flowers , on the subject of Auschwitz , including a series of portraits of prisoners based on photographs by camp photographer Wilhelm Brasse . The picture cycle was exhibited for the first time in the Städtische Galerie Speyer .
