Thomas Stricker

Thomas Stricker (* 1962 in St. Gallen , Switzerland ) is a Swiss sculptor , installation artist and action artist .

biography

Thomas Stricker did an apprenticeship as an electronics mechanic in St. Gallen from 1979 to 1983 . From 1986 to 1993 he studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf , where he was a master class student under Klaus Rinke in 1991 . In 1998, Stricker was a guest lecturer at the Bergen School of Art and Design in Norway .

Work stays took him to Outer Mongolia , (1994), a guest atelier at the Sydney College of the Arts to Australia , (2003), to ETANENO , a museum in the bushland of Namibia , (2007) and to Mexico City , 2010.

Thomas Stricker lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Thomas Stricker deals with issues relating to public space and landscape . His projects go far beyond the traditional understanding of sculpture. They show social interdependencies and interactions between people, nature and technology. Stricker's site-specific projects and sculptures use a variety of materials, such as alabaster , concrete , rubber , rigid foam , wood , plants or wax . All concrete sculptures allow for complex associations. The creation and work processes of Stricker's works are interactive communication processes with clients and viewers. In doing so, they also take up the concept of art of social sculpture, which was expanded by Joseph Beuys .

Since 1996, Stricker has called his long-term project 108 sculptural questions , in which he tries to sound out the possibilities of contemporary sculpture and to combine it with conceptual art , social sculpture and landscape architecture . The individual works are an attempt to find answers to a specific question about the current concept of sculpture. Nature in its many variations is a constantly recurring theme in his projects, which are created using different media - photography, text, video, the Internet. The artist's intention is to build a world that has little to do with the here and now, but is geared towards the tenses of the past and the future .
