The sculpture Biennale Münsterland should in content links to the 1977, 1987 and 1997, every ten years in Münster carried out event Skulptur.Projekte instead of the urban habitat have the landscape on stand and in contrast to these events.
The four biennials were supposed to close the time gap between the event held in Münster in 1997 and the follow-up date expected in 2007 and therefore took place every two years from 1999 onwards.
The four biennials
1999
The Coesfeld district hosted the first Sculpture Biennale in Münsterland in 1999. Contemporary sculptures were presented in close spatial connection to water castles and palaces.
Florian Matzner and Barbara Engelbach were in charge of the first segment . Locations of the eight sculptures were Nordkirchen , Westerwinkel and Vischering Castle .
The installations of the first segment were removed from their locations after the end of the biennale and can no longer be found there today.

Twelve of the submitted designs were selected for implementation by a jury. The sculptures should take up the diverse facets of the Münsterland cultural landscape and be site-specific.

Some of the installations stayed at their locations even after the event, such as the object “The solid reality of the conditioned” by Ulrich Genth & Heike Mutter in Vreden . This is a wooden helicopter whose rotor blades can be driven by the water mill of the nearby Hamaland Museum and, according to the artist, evoke associations with films such as Apocalypse Now or James Bond .
