Pascale Marthine Tayou (* 1967 in Yaoundé ) is a visual artist from Cameroon .

After stays in Stockholm and Paris, he now lives and works in Ghent (Belgium).

Tayou belongs to the group of African artists who are redefining post-colonial culture and mixing experiences of their origins with those of Europe.

His work is very diverse and consists of drawings, sculptures, installations, videos and performances. He deals with topics such as the origins of his family, his nomadic existence between his African roots and his life in Cameroon. His work feels like a diary. It raises questions about cultural and national identity, as well as existential issues such as AIDS or the complexity of urban life.

The deep works investigate the permeability of borders: he searches for a definition of himself, examines the character through his personal history and social contacts, as well as the aspects of the economy and migration at the same time.

Although still a young artist, Pascal Marthine Tayou already enjoys an international reputation. His work was exhibited at Documenta 11 in Kassel and the 2009 Venice Biennale , as well as at important exhibitions in Ghent and Paris. Rendez-vous at MARTa Herford was Tayou's first major exhibition in Germany.
