A renowned magazine contacted the well-known author Leo Richter - one of the main characters in Kehlmann's novel Ruhm - because it wanted to publish a portrait of him. Without thinking much, the author agrees and immediately regrets it, because Leo Richter is rather anxious and self-doubtful. Therefore, he is downright panic when he meets the journalist Guido Rabenwall, who is supposed to write his portrait.

The journalist, around seventy years old and over two meters tall, seems only interested in intimidating judges and uncovering the darker sides of his life. He regularly calls Richter at night with questions and listens to all friends and family members. Soon he knew a terrifying number of details from the author's life. Richter's attempt to stop the publication fails. Instead, Rabenwall sends him long questionnaires. The author cannot escape the annoying journalist. He even lies in wait for him to read and watches him interact with his readers.

But then Richter also wonders whether his fear was not so much the result of worry that Rabenwall might discover his secrets than that he did not have enough secrets. In the end, his vague personality dissolves.

Press reviews

"In a virtuoso and extremely amusing way, Daniel Kehlmann tells of the suffering of his alter ego, which is increasingly being driven into a role by the penetrating questions of the foreign journalist."
