The underground station Benrather Straße (abbreviation: Bes) is a station of the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn . It lies in the course of the third main route, the so-called Wehrhahn Line, on the border between the Carlstadt and the city center of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf , in the middle of the banking district. The preparatory work for construction of the new subway station began in May 2008. It was for the shell, the cover design as a construction method used. The opening was on February 20, 2016.
location
The underground station is built in a central location in downtown Düsseldorf. The structure follows the course of Kasernenstrasse .
history
In the original plans of the Wehrhahn Line , no train station was provided between the Heinrich-Heine-Allee and Graf-Adolf-Platz stops . However, with the increasing importance of the area around Benrather Straße due to the construction of new buildings and banks, the need for a separate stop was increased and included in the planning of the line. By March 2008 it was planned to build the underground station with two side platforms and between Benrather Strasse and Bastionsstrasse. But eventually the station was built 200 meters further north. With the construction of the underground line, Kasernenstrasse, which is one of the most heavily frequented streets in Düsseldorf, was completely freed from tram traffic. Three of the five tram lines have been replaced by the new underground lines and the other two have been routed along Berliner Allee . As a result, the trams no longer have to “torment” their way through the traffic and there are no more delays. For the future trunk route 6 in the direction of the port , a branch to the west is planned shortly after the underground station.
Station complex
There are two stair entrances and two elevators along Kasernenstrasse. In the western area, two escalators lead to a distribution level . Another entrance is in the east, which is accessible via an escalator and a fixed staircase. In the southern part are the two elevators, one on each side of the street, which lead directly to the tracks. On the distribution level, there is the option of using additional escalators and fixed stairs to get to the tracks on the 4.50 meter wide and 90 meter long side platforms .
A design competition was held in advance for the design of the Wehrhahn Line subway stations. The Benrather Straße underground station was then designed by the artist Thomas Stricker . The name of the project is "Heaven above - Heaven below" and is intended to transform the subway station into a kind of optical universe.
traffic
The Benrather Straße underground station is on the third trunk line of the Düsseldorf light rail network. The former above-ground station was completely eliminated.
The neighboring city and the north-eastern districts of Rath and Grafenberg can be reached via the line from Ratingen . The line branching off at the level of the employment agency connects the Gerresheim district . In the direction of the old town there is a connection to the Heinrich-Heine-Allee transfer point . In addition, the districts of Bilk , Volmerswerth , Wersten , Holthausen and Benrath located to the south and south-east are connected.
All light rail lines that run here are operated by the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn with low-floor light rail vehicles of the type NF8U.
