Volmerswerth is located directly on the Rhine , across from Neuss -Grimlinghausen and borders on the Düsseldorf districts of Flehe , Bilk and Kappes - Hamm . The island of Volmerswerth was first mentioned in 1173 as a fishing settlement as the property of the Schwarzrheindorf monastery in a document in which the Archbishop of Cologne, Philipp von Heinsberg, confirmed the privileges of Schwarzrheindorf. The abbess of Schwarzrheindorf appointed the pastor together with the descendants of the von Eller family (until 1803). The “court court on the Volmerswerth” was located in the abbey yard. In 1456 the place was given a place of jurisdiction, in 1487 Volmerswerth was incorporated into Düsseldorf. The sexton was first mentioned in a document in 1780. In 1834 the Düsseldorf city councilor Johann Philipp Baum acquired the abbey courtyard; In 1847 he built the new main building on Dorfstrasse. A forge also belonged to the farm. The neo-Gothic church of St. Dionysius dates from 1856. The flood of 1882 was described in a ballad by the poet Hans Müller-Schlösser . The writer Stefan Andreas worked as a student on the construction of the Rhine dam and processed his experiences in Volmerswerth in his first novel. The Rhine dike was built after the great flood of winter 1925/26.
