geography

Knittkuhl consists of a housing estate on the outskirts of Düsseldorf, northwest of the Bergische Kaserne and east of the Aaper forest .

history

The area of today's district historically belonged to the Hasselbeck Honnschaft in the Duchy of Berg and since 1930 to the community of Hasselbeck-Schwarzbach in the Düsseldorf-Mettmann district . The eponymous farm In der Knittkuhle and the farms In der Flieten and Neuenhof were located in the area . The current settlement was built in the 1960s for the soldiers of the nearby Bergische Kaserne as well as for the civilian employees of the Defense Division III in Wilhelm-Raabe-Str. Düsseldorf and consists of single and multi-family houses. Since part of the settlement was inhabited by British soldiers at that time, the settlement was popularly known as the "Nato settlement".

When the municipality of Hasselbeck-Schwarzbach was divided between Düsseldorf and Ratingen on January 1, 1975 by the Düsseldorf Act , the Knittkuhl settlement came to Düsseldorf and was assigned to the Hubbelrath district in district 7 . On February 13, 2014, the Düsseldorf city council decided to spin off the Knittkuhl housing estate from Hubbelrath and create Düsseldorf's fiftieth district from it.
