history

Pedestrian bridge over the Hellerhofweg

Since Hellerhof was only formed in the second half of the 20th century from the south-eastern third of what was then the Garath district, this district has no older history. However, in addition to Garath, a large farm in the Hellerhof area also has a long and older history. This farm was mentioned in a document as "Hoff zum Hellendaill" as early as 1447. The name is derived from the valley of the Garath brook , the banks of which in the area of the farm drop off steeply like a gorge. The valley was called Höllental and is therefore the namesake.

In the document from 1447 already cited, the farm became the property of the owner of Haus Garath through inheritance . The farm is also mentioned in another document in 1503. Because the farm was located on the thoroughfare from Düsseldorf to Mülheim (Cologne) at that time, it was completely devastated during the Thirty Years' War by groups of mercenaries who frequently passed through . The road was moved about 500 m to the east in 1670. From this point on, the farm was located off the road and was rebuilt and leased. In 1676 the name of a tenant was first mentioned in a church register. In 1788 the farm was sold to Gottfried Klein and was now an independent farm. Later the farm was divided into the two farms Neu- and Althellerhof with the purchase of land. The buildings of the Neuhellerhof were also called Haus an der Chaussee in the 19th century . Around 1850, Prince Peter von Arenberg acquired the Neuhellerhof and leased it in 1895. In 1909 Paul Poensgen , who had already acquired Haus Garath in 1890, also took over the Neuhellerhof. In 1936 the lease of the Althellerhof ended. After the lease agreement for the Neuhellerhof was terminated in 1939, the Neuhellerhof and Althellerhof were merged again into one estate. The last owner of the farm from the von Burgsdorff family sold areas on both sides of Koblenzer Strasse to the city of Düsseldorf for development in 1962/1971. The name of the district is derived from the Althellerhof known as the "Musterhof".

Since Hellerhof was formed relatively late, it has by far the youngest population of any district in Düsseldorf. The development of the district began in 1976. As a rule, there are mostly one- and two-family houses and only a few multi-family houses and high-rise buildings have been built in order to be able to settle a well-educated, affluent population south of Garath, consisting mainly of young families, who would otherwise be able to settle in the southern neighboring cities Langenfeld and Monheim am Rhein would have migrated. In the 1980s and 1990s the advertising slogan was: "Living in Düsseldorf - green Hellerhof." The corresponding logo represented a pink butterfly in the green, which was previously set up as a sculpture at the shopping center.

Living

In Hellerhof you live very quietly, the streets in the district are largely traffic-calmed by speed bumps and the residential areas are shielded from the through streets B 8 and Hellerhofweg by noise barriers . A bridge for pedestrians and cyclists has been built above the noise protection walls in Hellerhof-West, over which the Hellerhofweg can be safely crossed. From Hellerhof-Ost, a pedestrian bridge beginning above the noise protection wall, which crosses the B 8 and a river, leads to the Hellerhof S-Bahn station. In addition, many green areas were created along the streets in the residential areas.
