St. Matthäus is a Catholic parish church in the southwest of the Garath district of Düsseldorf . It was built from 1968 to 1970 according to plans by Gottfried Böhm and is counted among the most important examples of modern church architecture .

architecture

The church and the south-eastern residential area of Garath that surrounds it and was completed in 1972 were built simultaneously during the fourth construction phase of the new district in the south of Düsseldorf, which has been developing since 1961. Together with the St. Hildegardis senior citizens' residence and the Hildegardis chapel , the church building forms a striking urban ensemble in the center of the district. Böhm created an unmistakable landmark for Garath in a personal design language without symmetries , with creative allusions to Romanesque style elements .

St. Matthäus is mainly made of brick on the ground floor and exposed concrete upwards . The rectangular floor plan with the community area in the west and the altar in the east has varied beyond recognition due to multiple deviations and loosening. In the structure, nested cuboids contrast with irregularly arranged cones and round towers of different heights and thicknesses. Above the altar, to the east of the geometric center of the building, rises like a Romanesque crossing tower, a multi-broken tent roof , the top of which bears a small cross as the highest point of the overall complex.

The interior is also designed in an unconventional way with a variety of fixtures and breaks in the view and provides a framework for both the liturgy and personal devotion.

From the equipment, a wooden sculpture of is Fritz Schäfer worth noting that on the Matthew - patronage refers.

organ

The organ was built in 1982 by the organ builder Albert Fabritius (Düsseldorf). The slider chests -instrument has 13 registers on two manuals and pedal . The Spieltrakturen are mechanically, the Registertrakturen electrically.

local community

St. Matthew was initially a branch church of the parish of St. Norbert , whose parish church in the north-western quarter came to the edge of the enlarged parish area with the construction of the Hellerhof district to the south of Garath . The cooperation between the two Catholic parishes in Garath, which was necessary anyway because of the shortage of priests and the decline in church members, was used to solve the problem of the peripheral location of the parish center. On January 1, 2007, the parishes of St. Norbert and St. Theresia merged to form the new parish of St. Matthäus with a parish office and parish church in the south-west of Garath in the central location of today's parish area.

In Hellerhof, the parish maintains the St. Matthew's youth recreational facility and the Johannes-Haus as a meeting place, where a special service is celebrated on the third Sunday of each month with the “Pure Mass”.
