The Catholic Church of St. Norbert in the northwest of the Düsseldorf district of Düsseldorf-Garath was built in 1966/68 according to plans by Gerhard Nitschke and has been a subsidiary church of the parish of St. Matthew since 2007 .

history

On June 25, 1966, Pastor Schütz broke ground for the construction of the church. On December 4, 1966, the foundation stone was laid with a stone block from the 11th century, a spoil that comes from the Xanten Cathedral . On December 22nd, 1968 the parish church was consecrated with the patronage of St. Norbert von Xanten . The parish had the subsidiary church of St. Matthew in Garath-Südwest built from 1968–1970 according to plans by Gottfried Böhm . With the merger of the parishes of St. Norbert and St. Theresia on January 1, 2007, both churches also exchanged their roles as parish and branch churches.

architecture

The St. Norbert Church is mainly made of exposed concrete in the style of post-war modernism , which is why it can also be classified as brutal . The repetition of uniform geometric basic forms and the creation of a flexibly usable spatial structure suggest a relationship with the architecture of structuralism . The area of the community consists of five fan-like segments of different lengths, which are aligned in a semicircle from the east to a decagonal central area. This protrudes to the west like an apse with a 4/10 finish to the outside. The altar is located here. The segments are designed in two stages and have triangular stained glass windows on the outside under their gable roofs. The roofs unite with the folding roof of the decagon to form a star.

organ

The organ was built in 1976 by the organ builder Romanus Seifert & Sohn (Kevelaer). The slider chests -instrument has 16 registers on two manuals and pedal . The action actions are mechanical, the stop actions , like the couplings, are electro-pneumatic.
