Johann Dietrich von Gemmingen (born May 20, 1744 at Guttenberg Castle , † January 11, 1805 in Stuttgart ) was the ducal-Württemberg colonel and chamberlain .

Life

He was the son of Burkhard Dietrich von Gemmingen (1703–1749) and Charlotte Katharina born. Senft von Sulburg (1704–1749) from the Guttenberg-Fürfeld line of the barons of Gemmingen . He was born into a difficult time for the Fürfeld branch of the Barons of Gemmingen. Under his grandfather of the same name, Johann Dietrich von Gemmingen (1676–1757), the family began to have high debts. Johann Dietrich's father and uncle had died before their grandfather, so that after the grandfather's death in 1757, the grandchildren's guardians took over the management of the property. They struggled to pay off the house's debts through extensive sales of goods, but in the end the knight canton of Kraichgau had to step in with 36,000 guilders and put Fürfeld under compulsory administration for years. Only after the forced administration was lifted and his brother Johann Philipp Dietrich (1729–1785) died, he took over management of the Gemmingen-Fürfeld house in 1786.

As a young man he joined the military in Württemberg, was an ensign in Röder's dragoon regiment in 1760 and a lieutenant with a captain's license in 1765. In 1769 he was staff cavalry officer, in 1775 cavalry officer in the Guard on horseback and brigadier in the Guard Noble, to which he completely transferred in 1776. In 1788 he came to the General Staff as Rittmeister a la suite. In 1790 he became a real member of the ducal general staff. Oberwachtmeister in the Corps Landmiliz promoted and appointed head of the voluntary citizen corps in Stuttgart. In 1796 he retired. He was awarded the Military Merit Order.

From 1767 he was married to Friederike von Bönninghausen (1744-1806) and became the progenitor of the Stuttgart sub-branch of the Gemminger noble family.
