Reisholz is an industrial district of Düsseldorf in the 9th district . In practice, the larger, predominantly commercial or industrial area, which also includes parts of Benrath and Holthausen , bears the same name.

geography

location

Rice wood is enclosed in the north and west by industrially used areas of the Holthausen district . In the south, the district borders on Düsseldorf-Benrath . The Düsseldorf – Cologne railway line , or Further Straße, forms the joint border with Düsseldorf-Hassels in the east .

Use and development

Industrial settlements are characteristic and significant for the district. They are concentrated in a cross-district industrial area in the north, which extends from the railway line to the district center of Holthausen, and an industrial area in the south, which extends from the railway line to the Rhine and also takes up areas of the neighboring districts of Benrath and Holthausen. Between the two industrial areas are the residential areas, which often consist of three-storey apartment buildings with former company apartments built in the first half of the last century .

Establishments and shops that are located in the parts of the two industrial areas that are already on the area of the neighboring city districts are still often assigned to the Reisholz district, which is usually also reflected in their names, such as the examples of the Feldmühle Werk Reisholz in Benrath , the Reisholz power plant , the Reisholzer Hafen and Ikea Reisholz in Holthausen.

history

While names such as "Reisholt (1368)", "Reisholzer Gemark (1447)", "Reishholtz (1535)", "Im Riessels (1674)" or "Reisholz" were used more often in old documents and maps as a location, is a place or parish with these names was undetectable until the end of the 18th century. Originally, large areas of rice wood were covered with forest , corresponding to the part of the name “holt / wood” . The name part "ris" means swampy lowland and referred to the fact that it was a swampy forest area. The forest area is confirmed by the designation "Erbförsteramt in the Reisholzer Gemark" in a document from 1447 for the division of property between the brothers Heinrich and Johann von Elner (Eller).

The original Gemark comprised the forest area from Haus Horst (Hilden) in the south to Dammsteg (Wersten) in the north, laterally bounded by Eller and Hilden in the east and Benrath in the west. This district was thus much larger than the current district. However, there are also some old farms north of today's street An der Wilkesfurth in the area of the Oerschbach and Wersten. In contrast to the Hasseler Höfe, these farms were not included in the Benrath camp register. In a listing of parishes, parishes, hamlets and farmsteads in the Düsseldorf district, regional court districts, from 1836, a hamlet of Reisholz was listed for the first time under the Eller parish . At that time, the hamlet comprised 40 residential houses and 16 buildings used for agriculture. However, in the same document, a smaller area with 6 residential houses and 6 agricultural buildings under the name Reisholz belonging to the village of Benrath was listed.

In an "overview hand plan" from 1820 for the mayor of Benrath, the entire administrative area of Benrath was divided into corridors I to XVII . In this map only the corridor No. X was marked with rice wood. This corridor was the northeasternmost area of the mayor's office and is currently part of the Hasseler Forest. In the new version of the Rhenish rural community order of July 23, 1845, Reisholz was listed as one of the settlements that belonged to the community of Benrath. A ruling by the District President dated July 15, 1901 stipulated that parts of the communities of Benrath, Itter-Holthausen and Himmelgeist-Wersten (Halbusch area, from Oerschbach, northeastern part of Oberheid and from Niederheid the area around Kapplerhof) had been given the place name Reisholz since then led.

The current municipal boundaries are different from these older ones in many areas. Sometimes location names were also used for names that did not correspond to the municipal boundaries. An example of this is the use of the name Reisholz . This name is used for both Industrie-Terrains-Düsseldorf-Reisholz AG (IDR) and the former RWE Düsseldorf-Reisholz power station. The construction of this power plant took place from 1908 in the area of the community Itter-Holthausen and not in Reisholz and the activities of the IDR were not limited to rice wood.

The reason for this was the great importance for Reisholz and the neighboring communities, which was played by Industrie-Terrains-Düsseldorf-Reisholz AG (IDR) founded by Hermann Heye in 1898 . It opened up large areas in the area of the mayor's office of Benrath for large-scale industrial use, including its transport links by means of the freight and transfer station opened in 1899 on the Cologne – Duisburg railway line and the Reisholz Rhine port, which opened in 1901, on the Holthausen area. From 1899 on, numerous companies - including machine factories, chemical factories, paper factories, petrochemical warehouses, a gasoline refinery, wood wholesalers, a rolling mill, sheet metal and steel processing industries - settled in Holthausen-Itter and Reisholz.

Thomas Church

Many housing estates were built near the factories and factories. Even a church in the neo-Gothic style in Inkmannstrasse was donated by IDR AG in 1907. Be the mid-1950s had a new church in the Aschaffenburg road built - today's St. Thomas Church , sponsored by Henkel, designed by Walter Köngeter and Ernst Petersen - because the old church stood open up more industrial land by the IDR in the way.

During the area revision in 1908/09 in the south of Düsseldorf, in addition to the rural community of Eller, some council members from Reisholz also applied for integration into Düsseldorf. However, since Reisholz was part of the large community of Benrath, this wish failed due to the resistance of the then Mayor of Benrath, Peter Urkhaus. Reisholz was therefore incorporated into Düsseldorf in 1929. Reisholz, as already mentioned, belonged to the mayor's office of Benrath and, due to the high trade tax income after the settlement of the industrial companies, also contributed significantly to the prosperity of the mayor's office of Benrath, which was known as the "rich bride" when it was incorporated. the city of Düsseldorf was designated. Further details up to the incorporation are given under Benrath .

Economy and Infrastructure

Companies

The greater part of the northern industrial area is taken up by the 5 hectare factory premises of the companies Henkel and BASF , on which production began in 1900. Vallourec & Mannesmann Tubes also operates a press shop there, built in 1899 . Zamek Nahrungsmittel GmbH & Co. KG has its administration and production facilities in the south of Reisholz . A structural change is also taking place in Reisholz, which has led and will lead to an increase in the share of trade and non-industrial businesses, for example from the logistics sector. Most recently, the Feldmühle plant in Reisholz was closed. Henkel as well as Vallourec & Mannesmann Tubes had previously reduced their factory space. In 2000, Ikea opened another store on the former site of the Henkel plant . On the area no longer used by Mannesmann, a high-bay warehouse that was visible from afar and shaped the silhouette of rice wood and new retail stores were built. Parallel to the Rhine from the former Reisholz power plant via the Reisholz harbor further upstream towards Benrath, a modern office and residential district including a sports harbor is to be built in the near future.

Transportation

Reisholz S-Bahn station

The S-Bahn line S 6 Essen – Düsseldorf – Cologne stops at Düsseldorf-Reisholz station . Reisholz is also served by the Rheinbahn bus routes 724, E724, 727, 730, 785, 789, 835, NE 7 and 815. All lines except the 724 have stops at Reisholzer Bahnhof, so that you can change to and from the S-Bahn.

Individual and freight transport

Reisholzer Bahnstrasse, Henkel can be seen in the background

Reisholz is connected to the A 46 motorway to the north via junction 25 Düsseldorf-Holthausen . Since the extension of the Reisholzer Bahnstrasse (also called Reisholzer Umgehungsstrasse) went into operation in 2006, heavy goods vehicles have reached the autobahn without passing through Reisholzer residential areas. The south of Reisholz is touched by the multi-lane Münchener Straße from Düsseldorf-Garath to Düsseldorf-Bilk and takes on the traffic of the southern industrial area, especially from the Reisholz port, where goods are still handled.

To the north of the S-Bahn stop is the transfer station to the Reisholz industrial railway, which is operated by IDR and connects all areas of the Reisholz industrial areas to the railways.

power supply

With the Reisholz power plant built by RWE in the Holthausen area in 1906 , it was in close proximity to what was at times the largest coal-fired power plant in the world and thus an adequate power supply for the extensive industrial settlements in and around Reisholz. The power plant was shut down in 1966 and demolished in 1974. The high -voltage pylon of the Reisholz overhead line crossing , under whose legs the connecting railway track of the Holthausen substation runs through, is bizarre .

Sports facilities

Castle Guard Castello

The most important sports facility for outdoor sports and popular sports is the Niederheid sports park on the western edge of the district, which is the largest sports complex in Düsseldorf after the arena sports park . It is also the most important competition and training facility of the SFD'75 - Association for Sport and Leisure from 1975 Düsseldorf-Süd eV , the largest sports club in Düsseldorf with more than 3000 members.

In the vicinity of the Reisholz train station is the Castello , where the professional basketball team Giants Düsseldorf and the handball team Düsseldorf play their games and the women's World Cup professional boxing matches take place regularly. The multi-purpose hall belongs to the Free Christian Gymnasium , which started teaching in 2008 in the neighboring building to the north.
