The Zamek Nahrungsmittel GmbH & Co. KG (short Zamek ) was an after its founder Bernhard Zamek named companies in the food industry, based in Dusseldorf . Founded in 1932 as a manufacturer of stock cubes , the company produced soups, sauces, broths, pasta and ready meals at two locations in Düsseldorf and Dresden until 2014 .

history

Bernhard Zamek, who was actually a railway engineer, initially worked for the Rheinmetall company and was temporarily responsible for the energy supply for the city of Düsseldorf. In 1931 he opened a café in downtown Düsseldorf, where after a while the idea came up to offer not only coffee but also a broth with bread rolls.

From then on, Zamek experimented for about a year on an ideal recipe for a stock cube. To portion it, he designed a machine that cut cubes out of the stock and then wrapped them in aluminum foil. Since the stock cube was well received at trade fairs and in large kitchens, larger machines soon had to be constructed in order to speed up production, which soon increased sales. The stock cube was patented in 1933.

Founded in 1961, Dr. Lange & Co. GmbH supplies u. a. Food discounter with finished products as trademarks .

The company, which was family-owned until 2014 in the third generation, has 332 employees, 227 of them in Düsseldorf and 105 in Dresden. The company has its headquarters on the premises of the soap and detergent producer Eureka in Düsseldorf , which was taken over in 1936 . This is where stock cubes, canned soups and other ready-made meals are made.

In 2004 the company had sales of 150 million euros and 600 employees. In 2005 the production of own canned food was given up for cost reasons.

The 2011/12 financial year resulted in a loss of 4.5 million euros on sales of 80.1 million euros.

The Zamek Group, which consists of a total of eight companies, posted a loss of more than EUR 10 million in the 2012/13 financial year with sales of around EUR 74 million. In 2013, arrangements were made to relocate the plant from Düsseldorf to Poland because of the lower wages. However, the relocation failed due to a lack of money.

From 2012 to 2013 SME bonds with a value of 45 million euros were taken out. The bonds were already rated critically by Wirtschaftswoche in 2012.

On February 25, 2014 it became known that Zamek Nahrungsmittel GmbH & Co. KG had applied for self-administered insolvency proceedings at the Düsseldorf District Court . At the same time, applications were received for Günther Zamek Produktions- und Handelsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, Zamek Nahrungsmittel Dresden GmbH and Dr. Lange & Co. GmbH posed. At the same time, applications for other companies were announced.

Since the creditors and management did not agree on the further restructuring process, the Düsseldorf District Court approved the lifting of self-administration in June 2014 and appointed an insolvency administrator to manage the business. At the end of November 2014, the Frankfurt-based investment company Dricon Capital AG signed a takeover agreement for the three operating subsidiaries of the Zamek Group. These are to be advised by Ruf Lebensmittelwerk KG in all operational matters in the long term . A third of the 180 employees in Düsseldorf were temporarily employed by an employment company. The Swiss Hügli Holding , which was initially considered the favorite for the Zamek takeover, did not get a chance. For 2014 a turnover of 45 million euros was targeted. The public prosecutor's office has been investigating since the spring of 2015 because the bankruptcy was delayed because in 2012 and 2013 bonds worth 45 million euros were said to have been issued without collateral.
