The Castello Düsseldorf ( spelling CASTELLO Düsseldorf , until summer 2011 Burg-Wächter Castello ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Reisholz district of the North Rhine-Westphalian capital Düsseldorf .

The topping-out ceremony took place after about a year of construction on 24 June 2005 in the then "multi-purpose hall Dusseldorf-South" instead. The developer was the sports club of the Free Christian School Düsseldorf (FCSD).

From the 2008/09 season to 2012/2013 the Castello was home to the Giants Düsseldorf, a Bundesliga basketball team who had moved from Leverkusen, known there under the name Bayer Giants Leverkusen , to Düsseldorf in the summer of 2008 .

history

The Castello Düsseldorf was designed for the areas of sport, concerts and congresses as well as events. Originally, only a 4-fold gymnasium was planned for the neighboring Free Christian Gymnasium in Düsseldorf. This grammar school was designed by the school authority (Rheinisch-Bergischer-Verein) in 2003 and then founded. After various researches that were carried out nationwide, a hall emerged that should hold around 1500 to 2000 spectators. With this data, an architectural tender for the new construction of the high school and the construction of the multi-purpose hall was carried out and the winners were determined by a jury. The architects' office Franken & Fette from Düsseldorf achieved the first prize endowed with EUR 10,000 and received the contract to build the high school. The second prize, endowed with EUR 6,000.00, went to the architectural office Guida & Mischok from Rheinfelden.

After a large number of discussions and considerations, the multi-purpose hall was finally commissioned to the office in Rheinfelden. But now the hall was already suitable for the Bundesliga and even internationally suitable for the Bundesliga clubs HSG Düsseldorf (handball) and Magics Düsseldorf (basketball). These two clubs had been looking for a suitable hall in Düsseldorf for a long time. With the support of the former Lord Mayor of the state capital Düsseldorf Joachim Erwin and the parliamentary groups CDU and FDP, the city of Düsseldorf took over the anchor rents for the HSG and Magics.

In order to be able to market the hall, however, after thorough research, it needed to be organized for other events as well. Extensive discussions with television broadcasters, organizers, sports agencies, etc. resulted in the necessary suitability for television, press, concerts, events and congresses, as well as for around 78 indoor sports (which can be carried out in this hall). In October 2005 the hall was able to go into operation with a game of the Magics and a boxing match.

After the sports clubs have stopped their gaming operations, the hall is mainly used for school sports and occasionally for company events. After the insolvency of the sponsoring association, the city of Düsseldorf became the owner of the multi-purpose hall in August 2010 by " reversion ".

Events

The space available in the multi-purpose hall meets the requirements for various sports and other events. Their technical equipment is suitable for the organization of all kinds of concerts, banquets, fashion shows, events and incentives, other entertainment events as well as general meetings and conferences. Different hall capacities can be realized individually, so that the Castello is also suitable for smaller events.

The multi-purpose hall also serves as a sports facility. From 2005 until its dissolution in 2012, the home games of the second division handball team HSG Düsseldorf and, until 2008, also the second division basketball team (ProA) Düsseldorf Magics took place in the Castello. After the license transfer to Bayern Munich and the subsequent cessation of game operations by Magics, the hall served the Düsseldorf Giants from the 2008/2009 to 2013 season for home games in the basketball Bundesliga , and from 2010 the Pro A. In addition, the teams were irregular of the table tennis first division club Borussia Düsseldorf and the first division hockey club Düsseldorfer HC with special home games. In addition, boxing evenings are held regularly by the organizers Universum Box-Promotion and Spotlight Boxing , which are broadcast on television. On April 7, 2018, the final rounds of the German ESL Championships took place in the hall .

In darts , the 2018 Celebrity Darts World Cup and the 2017 German Darts Masters were held in the Castello.

In 2017, professional handball returned to the hall with the establishment of HC Rhein Vikings , a syndicate of the Neusser HV and ART Düsseldorf clubs , which from then on played in the second division. With the withdrawal of ART Düsseldorf from the syndicate and the relocation of the home games to Neuss from the 2019/20 season, however, this was ended and the hall is again without a sporty anchor tenant.

Fortuna Düsseldorf's futsal department has been playing its home games at the Castello since September 2019 .
