The Bayern Munich Basketball is the basketball department of the sports club Bayern Munich in the Bavarian state capital Munich . It was founded in 1946.

In the first decades of its existence, the men's team was able to achieve several successes at the national level. Among other things, they won the German championship in 1954 and 1955 and the DBB Cup in 1968 . Afterwards, however, the men's team only played in lower-class leagues for a long time. Since the 2011/12 season they are back in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). 59 years after the last German championship, the men's team won the third championship in 2014. In addition, the basketball department manages several youth teams in the highest divisions of the respective age groups , including the U-19 team in the youth basketball league (NBBL) and the U-16 team in the youth basketball league (JBBL).

On October 1, 2014, the department was spun off to FC Bayern München Basketball GmbH , of which the club is the sole shareholder . The company is led by the managing director Marko Pešić .

history

1945–1974: first successes

The department, which was founded in 1946, was able to celebrate great successes in the men's segment, especially in the 1950s and 60s, and overtook the local competitor and first post-war champion, MTSV Schwabing . These successes include winning the basketball championship in 1954 and 1955 and a decade later also winning the cup in 1968. After that, the team bobbed around and was even overtaken by local rivals USC Munich , who were first class until 1977 and until 1989 played second class. In 1974, the Bayern basketball players were finally relegated from the first division.

1974–2006: Between first and third division

When the two-pronged 2nd basketball league was founded in 1975, they weren't even qualified for the group south.

Klaus Schulz , historically the first basketball star of FC Bayern and at the time the department head of the club's third-class basketball players, received the order from President Willi O. Hoffmann to bring the team into the first division.

In 1982 he was promoted to the second division, which was followed five years later by the return to the highest national level. President Fritz Scherer and manager Uli Hoeneß stopped promoting basketball at FC Bayern and the club was no longer financially and therefore athletically no longer competitive. In the second season, 1989, followed by relegation to the second division. 1993 you had to leave this again after relegation to the regional league. In the 1995/96 season they were second class again for a year, the same was repeated in the 1999/2000 season and in the 2004/05 season. Nevertheless, with eleven seasons, they are one of the most consistent clubs in the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga Group South, which was replaced in 2007 by the establishment of ProA and ProB . After relegation in 2005, the team occupied the first place in the table in the Regionalliga Süd-Ost with only one defeat, but could not implement a renewed promotion due to a lack of support from the main club.

2006–2011: The way back to the Bundesliga

The male U-19 team had already been represented at the highest national level in the newly created junior basketball league since the 2006/07 season and qualified for the play-offs for the junior championship in the following season . The men's team was able to finish the 2007/08 season again in first place in the regional league, the fourth highest division after the introduction of the ProB. Due to a transfer of the license from Düsseldorf Magics , the team took part in the second-class ProA game in the 2008/09 season and thus skipped a division. In an internal survey in the spring of 2010, around 75% of the 23,000 participating members said they should give the basketball department more support and lead the first team back into the Bundesliga. In FCB President Hoeneß, the Bayern basketball players had a powerful advocate, with whom Vice President Bernd Rauch campaigned for years to encourage the basketball players again. To achieve these goals, Dirk Bauermann was hired for the 2010/11 season , who in addition to his position as national coach, was the new coach of the professional team. With a completely renewed team, which was strengthened by the then national players Steffen Hamann and Demond Greene , they were promoted to the basketball Bundesliga in March 2011 - seven game days before the end of the season . On the way to promotion, Bayern had defeated their competitor Würzburg in front of 12,200 people in the Olympic Hall in February 2011 and thus set a new record for the 2nd basketball league.

2011–2016: Establishment in the Bundesliga, Europe and third championship

His first BBL season since 1989 ended Bayern Munich in the fifth place, the authorized to participate in the playoffs, however, where the team already in the quarterfinals at the Artland Dragons failed. Due to the European continental federation ULEB received Wildcard Bayern basketball player came in the 2011-12 season also in Eurocup Basketball on. Due to their name and influence in the German sports landscape as well as their economic power (the team budget was around nine million euros as a climber), Bayern were among the heavyweights of the league within a very short time after their return to the Bundesliga, President Hoeneß appreciated the importance of FCB for basketball -Bundesliga in such a way, in which he said that the other clubs could "put up a candle that Bayern exists".

In the run-up to the second Bundesliga season after his return, President Hoeneß set the goal of “playing for the championship”. Shortly before the start of the 2012/13 season, the club separated from coach Bauermann. The reason given by the club was "different views on the leadership and further development of the team". His successor was initially the previous assistant Yannis Christopoulos , before Svetislav Pešić took over the office on November 27th . Under Pešić, the team moved into the final tournament of the BBL Cup 2013 , but had to admit defeat in the semi-final game to the eventual cup winner Alba Berlin . The main round of the 2012/13 BBL season was completed by the Bayern basketball players in fourth place, which led to another meeting with Alba Berlin in the playoff quarter-finals. This time the Pešić team prevailed against the capital city club with a 3-0 sweep . In the semifinals, FC Bayern Munich had an exciting series with the defending champion and later champion Brose Baskets , which ultimately lost almost 2-3 wins.

For the 2013/14 season , the club received another wildcard from the ULEB, which now entitles them to participate in the most important European club competition, the ULEB Euroleague . After winning over Stelmet Zielona Góra , Montepaschi Siena , Unicaja Málaga and Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul in the preliminary round, the Bayern basketball players moved into the top 16 intermediate round for the first time in the club's history. With a total of five wins, including a prestigious 85:83 home win against last year's finalists and later finalists Real Madrid , they were eliminated there as sixth in the group, but set a new record for a German basketball team. As in the previous year, FC Bayern Munich took part in the BBL Top Four 2014 and failed again in the semifinals against Ratiopharm Ulm . The main round of the 2013/14 BBL season ended the Pešić team in first place in the table and thus moved back into the playoffs. After the team had prevailed against MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in the quarter-finals and against EWE Baskets Oldenburg in the semifinals , they met Alba Berlin again in the final series. Against the reigning cup winner, the Bayern basketball players were able to prevail in the best-of-five final series after four games and thus celebrated the third championship in the club's history - 59 years after the last title win.

Since 2016: Change of coach as table leader and two champions

In the summer of 2016, Aleksandar Đorđević (also the national coach of Serbia) took over the coaching position as the successor to Svetislav Pešić, after he had previously resigned for health reasons.

In February 2018, Đorđević led the team to victory in the German cup competition with an 80:75 final victory over Berlin. At the end of March 2018, Bayern announced the separation from coach Aleksandar Đorđević, as they wanted to give the team, which, according to Managing Director Marko Pešić, was “highly talented” and ranked first in the Bundesliga, “a new impetus and leadership approach”. President Uli Hoeneß had previously said that one would experience “the best season in history” for FCB basketball players. Pešić also gave “poor communication” as the reason for the trainer's dismissal. Đorđević then raised serious allegations against some of the club officials, whom he accused of envy. He had perceived "personal distance and negativity" and he assessed the dismissal as an "unjust measure".

In April 2018 Dejan Radonjić was hired as a new coach. Shortly thereafter, he led the team to win the German championship title. In 2018 the club received the invitation to participate in the ULEB Euroleague . In the 2018/19 season, FCB was again German champions under Radonjić. At the beginning of January 2020, Bayern parted with coach Dejan Radonjić, although they were undefeated leaders in the Bundesliga at the time. In the Euroleague the season yield with six wins from 17 games was until then weak. According to managing director Marko Pešić, the team needed a “new impulse and approach”. Assistant coach Oliver Kostić took over as coach. At the time of the interruption of the 2019/20 season due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , FCB was at the top of the Bundesliga with 19 wins and two defeats. In the season-end tournament of the Bundesliga, which was held after the interruption to determine the German champions, Bayern were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Ludwigsburg. The new head coach was the Italian Andrea Trinchieri in July 2020 .

Olympic Ice Stadium, 2010/11 venue

The basketball department of FC Bayern Munich played its home games near the club's premises until 2010, in the municipal sports hall on Säbener Strasse. After the men's team rose to the ProA league , their capacity no longer corresponded to the licensing requirements of the AG 2. Basketball-Bundesliga der Herren eV and a new home had to be found. In the negotiations with the city of Munich, the club initially sought to move to the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle , the venue for the basketball competitions at the 1972 Summer Olympics . However, these plans could not be implemented for the time being due to the necessary renovation and conversion measures. Instead, they quickly moved into the Olympic Ice Stadium , which has been home to the EHC Munich ice hockey team since 2002 . Because of the double occupancy, the sports facility had to be converted into a basketball hall with a capacity of around 4,000 seats on each match day. The association bore the majority of the costs for this. For the staging of the top game of the 2010/11 season against the s.Oliver Baskets Würzburg in February 2011, an agreement was made with Munich Olympiapark GmbH to use the 12,500-seat Olympic Hall .

Audi Dome

Audi Dome, venue since 2011/12

In the course of the renewed rise in 2011, the problem of the venues returned to the agenda, as increased audience numbers were expected in the Bundesliga . The permanent use of the Olympic Hall, initially favored by the association, could not be realized due to its regular occupancy with other events on the game weekends. Therefore, negotiations were again carried out with the city of Munich to move to the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle. The subject of the recent discussions was also a possible restructuring worth at least 1.5 million euros and a transfer of the naming rights to the entire association for their refinancing. After the positive outcome of the negotiations, the club signed a corresponding lease in May 2011, so that the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle will serve as a new home for the Bayern basketball players after the renovation work was completed in September 2011. After the car manufacturer Audi acquired the naming rights to the hall in July 2011, it was renamed Audi Dome .

SAP Garden

From the 2021/22 season, the planned SAP Garden in the Olympic Park is to become the new FC Bayern venue. The arena is financed by Red Bull GmbH and is expected to cost around 100 million euros. In addition to the EHC Red Bull Munich ice hockey club , FCB will use the multi-purpose hall with up to 11,500 seats as a permanent tenant (contract for 15 years).

youth

In 1973 and 1974, the female U20 of FC Bayern won the German championship title.

In 2014 the FCB youngsters won the title in the male DBB U18 Cup. In 2015, 2016 and 2017, the Munich boys' teams won the German U14 championship three times in a row.

In the U19 Bundesliga NBBL, FC Bayern became German champions in 2015, 2017 and 2019 and in the U16 Bundesliga JBBL 2019.
