The UBC Munster is a basketball -Verein whose first men's team in the 2. Bundesliga Pro B plays. It has been operating under the name WWU Baskets of UBC Münster since June 2015. The short form EMU Baskets is used in tables .

history

UBC Münster was founded in 1961 under the name Universitäts Basketball-Club Münster . In 1963, the volleyball players joined the UBC Münster and the club was renamed USC Münster ( University Sports Club Münster ). In the 1969/70 season , the first men's team of the USC succeeded in ascending to the two-tier basketball league ( BBL ) founded in 1966 , in which the USC team, mainly due to financial reasons and the resulting departure of players, only could hold a season and in the 1970/71 season again played in the Regionalliga West (then 2nd division).

In 1974 the club signed a contract with the Medico company, which enabled the club to return to the 2nd Bundesliga. But after the departure of the main sponsor and because of the low number of viewers, relegation followed.

In 1978, due to internal disputes, the basketball and volleyball department was split into the UBC (University Basketball Club) and the USC (Independent Sports Club) Münster .

Werner Bergmann (made an honorary member in 2018 and awarded the Silver Badge of Honor by the German Basketball Association ) shaped the UBC for a long time as coach of the men's team and as club president, in the first half of the 1990s Bruno Socé worked as a trainer in Münster.

It was not until 2000 that he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. But you got off again.

The resurgence

The former UBC youth player and former Bundesliga professional Götz Rohdewald took over as coach of the team in the second regional league in 2007. The team consisted mainly of talented German players, most of whom were already active at UBC Münster in their youth. In 2008 they missed direct promotion to the first regional league: Second, they had to admit defeat to BG Dorsten. Up to 720 viewers came to the top games in the 2008/2009 season. On March 14, 2009, two game days before the end of the season, the UBC secured promotion to the first regional league after two years of abstinence with a 78:71 away win against their direct pursuer SV Hagen-Haspe.

2009/2010 season

For the new 1st regional league season, the UBC had to make a change in the team. Florian Herzog, long-time high performer, ended his career. Andreas Peters took over the position of captain. The squad was strengthened with the American Hayden Heiber, who previously played in Hawaii. Stephan Carduck ( USC Freiburg ) and Max Schulze-Pals ( Phoenix Hagen ) also joined the team. Stefan Buschmeier, on the other hand, left the team after just a few game days. He only got a few parts of the game and didn't see any chance of recovery anytime soon. For the second half of the season, the UBC strengthened in the relegation battle with the second US player Brice Brooks, who previously went on a basket hunt at TV Langen . The U16 youth team of UBC Münster completed their first season in the JBBL , the youth basketball league, and secured relegation.

2010/2011 season

Despite the departures of Heiber, Brooks and Sprünken, who were important pillars of the team, the UBC was considered stronger this season. With the Stadtwerke Münster basketball club had found a new financial backer after years without a main sponsor. Jasper Knoch, Bernd Fährrolfes (both from GiroLive-Ballers Osnabrück ), Stefan Fürst ( SVD 49 Dortmund ), Stefan Wess (own youth) and Timothy J. Smith ( Kentucky Wesleyan College ) strengthened the line-up. The official season goal was to do better than last year (10th place).

2011 to 2017

In 2012, Rohdewald stopped working as a trainer. Under his leadership, the return to the first regional league and the establishment there was successful. His successor was Phillip Kappenstein, under whose leadership the UBC established itself in the upper third of the 1st Regional League. In the 2014/15 season they became runner-up.

The team name was changed in June 2015: From then on, the name was officially called "WWU Baskets des UBC Münster" (short form: WWU Baskets Münster). In this way, the bond with the Westphalian Wilhelms University should be made clear, the leadership justified the measure.

As in the previous year, the 2015/16 season ended in second place in the first regional league. The team also finished the 2016/17 season in second place.

Since 2017

For the 2017/18 season, the club brought Stefan Wess back to his homeland, a man from Münster who had made it into the A2 national team. The team won the championship title in the Regionalliga West and the WBV Cup under coach Philipp Kappenstein. The best scorer in the league in the championship year was Jan König with an average of 16.8 points per game, followed by the American Bryce Leavitt, who scored 15.7 points per game. In the 2018/19 game year, the Münster-based team completed the northern season of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB as promoted to first place in the table. The team's successes triggered a large number of spectators, the hall on Berg Fidel was sold out several times at home games with around 3000 spectators. In the championship round, the euphoria was increased. Erfurt and Bayern Munich II were eliminated, in the semifinals there was a clash with Schwenningen . In the third game against Schwenningen at the end of April, Münster prevailed again in front of 3000 spectators in its own hall and thus moved into the final against Leverkusen . Thus, the team achieved promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA, but it was previously announced that they would not be promoted to ProA so that the requirements in the second-highest German division would not be met. Such a step would come too early, said manager Helge Stuckenholz, a possible entry into the ProA in January 2019. In the two finals, the team lost to Leverkusen (86:89 and 60:88), so ended the 2018/19 season as runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. The 2019/20 season, which ended prematurely in mid-March 2020 due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, was completed as third in the ProB North relay.
