SVD 49 Dortmund is a Dortmund basketball team founded in 1976 . The team is also known as SVD 49 Baskets . The first team of the club currently plays in the first regional league. The greatest success was promotion to the 1st Bundesliga in 1992. In addition to the first team, there are five other senior teams and five youth teams, including a U18, a U16, a U14, a U12 and a U10.

history

In 1976, a previously independent basketball community joined the "SV Derne 49 Dortmund" department. Today the SV Derne 49 Dortmund is one of the largest multi-discipline clubs in Dortmund. As early as 1977, the 49ers were promoted to the 1st district class. This was the beginning of a successful era in SVD history . A little later, the previously unknown club was promoted to the district league. In the 1980/1981 season he was directly promoted to the national league. Success at the West German level was almost inevitable. After a brief interlude in the regional league, the team was promoted again to the regional league, in which the team was active for the next three years.

In the season 1988/1989 they reached the 1st regional league. As a newcomer to the league, the SVD immediately made it to the second highest German division, the 2nd Bundesliga. In the following year you could achieve the goal declared before with relegation. With many new signings, some of them prominent, the club management at the time wanted to orient itself towards the 1st Bundesliga in the medium term. The "golden years" of Dortmund basketball began in the 1990s. At the end of the 1991/1992 season, the young team from Dortmund rose to the 1st Bundesliga for the first time. At the end of the first Bundesliga season, SV Dortmund could not hold the class and returned to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the final balance, the team was able to show, among other things, a victory against the German record champions Bayer Giants Leverkusen . Due to financial constraints, the game was played in the first regional league in the coming season. They played there until the 1999/2000 season. Although the SVD was always represented in the upper third of the table in these years, the rise could never be realized for financial reasons, except in the years 1993/1994 and 1999/2000.

The 2000/01 game year was marked by economic problems, among other things, the sponsor at the time ended his involvement in Dortmund and stopped providing financial support. The club was forced to start over in the 1st regional league again. The club was able to recover quickly and ranked fourth between 2000 and 2005. In addition, the WBV Cup was won in 2005 and 2006. In the 2005/06 season, the SVD team achieved first place and thus the athletic qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga. After the possible advancement was in question for a long time, it could finally be realized with the help of the new main sponsor, the PSD Bank . However, the Westphalia could not hold the class again and were relegated to the bottom of the table after only one year back in the regional league.

On April 8, 2003, the Friends of the SVD Young Stars eV was founded. The purpose of the association is the ideal and financial support of the basketball youth of SVD 49. This support association also contributes to the financial planning security of the association.

Sporting successes

The sporting highlight was the season in the 1st Bundesliga. It is also worth mentioning that they won the WBV Cup twice in 2005 and 2006. The surprising entry into the second main round of the BBL Cup is one of the club's greatest successes. At that time, you could first defeat the then second division team Düsseldorf Magics and the ETB Wohnbau Baskets Essen . In the second main round they then met Bundesliga club EWE Baskets Oldenburg , against whom they had no chance.

Venue

The current venue is the "Brügmannhalle" in downtown Dortmund. It currently has 300 places. Since this hall no longer meets the requirements of a modern sports hall, the city of Dortmund is planning a new building in the medium term. The future new hall of the 49ers is then expected to be intended for 3500-5000 people.
