Georg Kämpf (* 1956 in Bayreuth ) is a former basketball player and current coach. For a long time he was seen as a role model for Bayreuth basketball and from 1998 to 2002 and from 2011 to 2015 he also worked as a trainer and in the youth field for the BBC Bayreuth club .

Career

player

Kämpf rose as a young player together with his two older brothers with the Post SV Bayreuth in the premiere season 1975/76 of the 2nd basketball league in the top German basketball league and then helped to keep the club in this league. So it came in the basketball Bundesliga 1978/79 , when Kämpf was the top scorer of the season, at the end of the season in the fight for relegation to the decisive duel with 1. FC Bamberg , which Bayreuth won with 81:79. The team then traded as USC Bayreuth from 1979 and reached the final in the Korać Cup under coach Tom Schneeman in 1982/83 . The participation in the finals combined with the trips to the European Cup caused such serious financial problems that Kämpf left the club in 1983 for Berlin. Personally, Kämpf made it to the national team in friendly matches of the German men's national team in 1983/84 after the club change , without being used in the final squad.

After Bayreuth's relegation back to the second division, a new sponsor joined with Steiner Optik and, alongside coach Schneeman, Kämpf returned to the team now known as BG Steiner Optik Bayreuth after just one year . Together with Calvin Oldham on the "foreigner position" they achieved immediate resurgence in the 2nd Bundesliga 1984/85 and at the same time reached the final of the cup competition as the first second division team, in which they were defeated by the champions and defending champions ASC 1846 Göttingen . After being promoted again they reached the cup final in 1986, which this time was lost to TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Finally, in 1988, they won this competition and won the club's first title as the German cup winner . Then in 1987 from the led the United States has come coach Lester Habegger a wrap on that while it should also lead to the first championships of the club, but also led to the departure of combatants, the place for Alvin "Bo" Dukes and the young Michael Koch make had to. In the 1988/89 season Kämpf led the regional division TSV Ansbach as a player- coach for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga.

Trainer

In 1989 Kämpf moved to the first division club BG Ludwigsburg as a coach, which he was able to lead twice into the play-offs for the championship. After two seasons he went to the ambitious second division club SV 03 from Tübingen , with whom he achieved promotion in the 2nd basketball league in 1991/92 . The promotion apparently came too early, so that the club in the basketball Bundesliga 1992/93 as bottom of the table in the group south had to go back to the second division. Then Kämpf also worked as a trainer at the DBB . In addition to working as an assistant for the men's national team, he was also the coach of the U18 junior team, where he also looked after Dirk Nowitzki .

At the beginning of the 2. Basketball Bundesliga 1996/97 Kämpf took over the first division relegated TG Hitachi from Landshut , who had to withdraw the team for financial reasons in mid-December. As a result, he trained the Austrian runner-up UBC Stahlbau from Oberwart , who only had to admit defeat to UBC St. Pölten in the championship final series in 1998 and were again runner-up. However, Kämpf returned to Bayreuth, who had previously lost their main sponsor Steiner Optik and were no longer competitive in the 1998/99 basketball Bundesliga . After relegation, he withdrew to the third-class regional league and Kämpf achieved immediate promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga with the club as BBC Bayreuth in 2000. In the 2nd basketball league in 2001/02 they were second in the table again behind Kämpf's former club from Ludwigsburg, which was second division champions of the group south with just one defeat.

Kämpf then trained in the 2002/03 season with the UBC from St. Pölten , which in the 1990s, as six-time Austrian champion, had already had its best days. In the 2002/03 season of ÖBL they occupied the penultimate place in the table and Kämpf returned to Germany for SV 03 Tübingen, which he had already led in 1993 in the German basketball league. In the 2nd basketball league in 2003/04 he managed to get promoted again with the club, but then decided to leave Tübingen for family reasons. In 2005 he took over the relegated second division Bayern Munich, which he led to the championship in the third division regional league. The club decided to forego the promotion for the time being. After a regional league championship in 2008, the license from Düsseldorf Magics was taken over and played directly in the ProA 2008/09 , which had replaced the 2nd Bundesliga in 2007 with the ProB . Here, however, there was a dispute with the club's management and the separation before the start of the new season. In 2011 Kämpf returned to his home club in Bayreuth and became the club's junior coordinator. After separating from Andreas Wagner as the coach of the Bundesliga team at the beginning of the basketball Bundesliga in 2011/12 , Kämpf also acted as coach of the first division team for one game on an interim basis. After several years as youth coordinator at BBC Bayreuth, he took over the coaching position for the third time (for Aleksandar Nadjfeji ) at the Tigers Tübingen (now in the 2nd Bundesliga Pro A) in January 2019 . He led Tübingen to ninth place in the table.

Private life

Georg Kämpf was born as the youngest of four sons of the Bayreuth ophthalmologist Richard Kämpf from Würzburg and his wife Gunda, née. Friedrich born. As a teenager, his mother was multiple German high jump champion, and the then 16-year-old was not able to participate in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin for political reasons, despite qualifying. His two eldest brothers Hans (* 1945) and Thomas (* 1946) formed the legendary "Kämpf Brothers" with Georg, who made it to the basketball league in 1976/77 with the Bayreuth Post-SV and in 1979 in the relegation derby relegated the local rivals FC Bamberg (now Brose Bamberg ) to the second division.

While his brothers both turned to dentistry, Kämpf stayed true to sports and studied sports education. Here he met his current wife Katharina, who works as a teacher for sports, ethics and social studies at a Bayreuth high school. The couple has three daughters and lives in Bayreuth.

Local politician

Georg Kämpf has been a member of the Bayreuth City Council since May 2014. He is a member of the parliamentary group of the Bayreuth community .
