The Bayreuth Community (BG) is a free electoral association in the city of Bayreuth . From 2012 to 2020 she provided the local mayor, Brigitte Merk-Erbe .

history

The Bayreuth community has existed as a Free Voters 'Association since 1972. Its predecessor from 1952 was the non-partisan Free Voters' Group (ÜFW), which won five out of 42 seats in the city council elections that year. Its founder was the lawyer Fritz Meyer I (1898–1980), and the later Bavarian Finance Minister Konrad Pöhner also belonged to the first city council faction of the ÜFW . In 1956 the ÜFW became the third largest political force in the city with six seats.

In 1960 and 1966, the ÜFW joined the FDP and the Bavarian Party under the name of Bayreuth Community in the city council elections. The alliance received nine and seven out of 42 mandates, respectively.

In 1972 the Bayreuth Association was re-established from the ÜFW - initially as an association with no legal capacity - and from then on acted autonomously without the previous partners. In 1972 she won five of 44 seats, three in 1978 and 1984, six in 1990 and nine in 1996 and 2002. In the city council election in 2008 the number of ten seats was finally achieved, so the BG was on a par with the SPD . After another city council joined the parliamentary group in 2009, the BG is the second largest parliamentary group in the Bayreuth parliament after the CSU .

Since January 1995, the journalist Bernd Mayer , who had left the CSU, was a member of the BG city council. From 1996 to 2002 he was second and from 2002 to 2008 third mayor of the city, from May 2008 to the end of November 2009 he was chairman of the BG city council. Stephan Müller currently leads the BG parliamentary group. The association's chairman has been Frank Hofmann since 2012, who was confirmed in his office in November 2017.

Lord Mayoress

On March 25, 2012, Brigitte Merk-Erbe was elected Lord Mayor of the BG in a runoff election. Supported by the SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , she prevailed with 52.77 percent of the votes against the previous incumbent Michael Hohl from the CSU, to whom she was defeated in the first ballot with 38.28 percent. She took up office on May 1, 2012.
