The 1996/97 season is the 22nd season of the 2nd Bundesliga . The regular season began on September 21, 1996 and ended on March 8, 1997. The "postseason" with relegation and relegation rounds lasted from March 13, 1997 to April 26, 1997.
Before the start of the season, the league was divided into two seasons (north and south), each with twelve teams. The six best teams in the final table of the relays acquired the right to participate in a three-tier relegation round with the six worst teams in the 1996/97 basketball Bundesliga for promotion to the basketball Bundesliga (BBL). The six worst teams each took part in a relegation round. Two teams descended into the assigned regional leagues regularly per season. The results of the main round were taken into the relegation rounds.
Season Notes
In the north group there was a promoted team with Telekom Baskets Bonn last season , but no relegated team, so Schalke 04 , who had been relegated to the sport, stayed in the league.
Before the season, Eintracht Frankfurt and TG Landshut, who were relegated to the first division in mid-December, withdrew from the South Group. All Landshut games were taken out of the ranking and the season was played with ten teams to the end.
Champions of the 2nd basketball league were: BC Johanneum Hamburg (North) and USC Freiburg (South), who achieved promotion to the BBL in the relegation round.
