In 2012, VfL Bochum BG merged with BG Südpark to form the new VfL AstroStars Bochum , which took over the operations of the two main clubs with the 2012/2013 season. With 584 members (DBB: 01/2013) the second largest German basketball club was created.

Club history

1957-1970

The basketball community was founded on July 4th, 1957 and took part in games in Germany the following year. In a short time, the basketball players rose to the upper league, the top German division at the time. The first women's team was created in 1960. When the German youth championships were played in 1965, the VfL youth team was only defeated by the basketball players from Oldenburg in the final.

1970s and 1980s

In 1971 the women's team was promoted to the league and made it into the league at the end of the 1970s. In 1981 the men's team followed suit and also made it to the regional league. In 1987 the women continued to rise to the 2nd basketball division. On November 7, 1988, the basketball players became a legally independent departmental association of VfL Bochum 1848 eV

1990 until today

After promotion to the 2nd division, the women's team also rose to the top German division in 1993, the 1st basketball division. As a result, VfL Bochum BG was split up into the independent women's and men's basketball departments in 1994. The women's department was now called Blue-Basket . After two years of membership in the first division, the women were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga, but the men's team in the same year to the 2nd Bundesliga, which also won the West German Cup in 1996. Due to economic problems, the women's team withdrew from Bundesliga operations after two years in the second division and filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of the new millennium. The women's team was able to be reintegrated into VfL Bochum BG and began a new start in the regional league, while the men started in the district league. In the 2004/05 season, the women's team were WBV cup winners and only just missed promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga, whereupon the team fell apart and is now playing in the major league. The men's team made it to the regional league in 2005, followed by relegation in 2007. In the 2007/08 season, promotion to the regional league with 2nd place was not achieved originally from athletic strength. Due to the surprising withdrawal of DJK Rheda from the 2nd regional league on May 30, 2008, however, the third team of SVD 49 Dortmund, which was initially banned from promotion because of the relegation of their second team from the 2nd regional league, was able to enter the state league champions Advance upper league. The WBV awarded the vacant place in the regional league on June 2, 2008 to VfL Bochum, as the best runner-up in the district league, which was promoted a good three months after the last game day despite missing the championship.

In the 2008/2009 season, the men surprisingly finished 5th in the table as a newcomer to the regional league. Stefan Studeny, who saw himself only as a transition coach, then gave up his position as head coach. Although there was a vacant place in the regional league, the women only just missed promotion with second place in the league. Although the basketball association was asked by the club to take over the space that had been lost due to the withdrawal of ETB Essen, the association did not respond. At the beginning of the 2011/2012 season, the club announced that it was aiming for a merger with the basketball club BG Südpark / Bochum AstroStars, which is also based in Bochum. After both general assemblies had agreed, a new club was founded on December 1, 2011 under the name VfL AstroStars Bochum , which started playing in the 2012/2013 season and took over the licenses of the two old clubs.

organization

The basketball department of VfL Bochum 1848 eV was a legally independent departmental association. All sporting and organizational matters of the basketball players were regulated independently by the board of the department, independently of the presidium of the entire club. Only amendments to the statutes required the approval of the VfL Bochum presidium. The chairman of the basketball department belongs to the presidium through his office.
