The association for physical exercise AstroStars Bochum 1848 e. V. (short: VfL AstroStars Bochum ) is a departmental association of VfL Bochum that was created in 2011 . It is the successor club of VfL Bochum BG and was created through its merger with BG Südpark Bochum. The club took over the licenses of its predecessor clubs on July 1, 2012 and has been participating in the competition since the 2012/2013 season. At the end of 2016, it was the sixth largest German basketball club with 555 players. The Bundesliga team has been playing under the name VfL SparkassenStars Bochum since the 2017/18 season .

Club structure

Men's

The men's area comprises a total of 11 teams participating in the competition and one amateur team. The 1st team played in the 2013/2014 season as promoted players in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB and immediately reached the quarter-finals, where they then had to admit defeat to the later champions Basket Akademie Weser Ems / Oldenburg. In addition, the Bochum team received the “Team of the Season” award. In the 2014/15 season, the team came back to the play-offs . Unlike in the previous year against the same opponent, this time the Hanau White Wings prevailed with 2-1 wins in the round of 16 . They also made it into the play-offs in the 2015/16 season. There they were eliminated in the first round with two defeats against the Scanplus Baskets from Elchlingen. In the 2016/17 season they made it to the semi-finals of the play-offs for the first time. Before the 2017/2018 season, the first team changed their name to VfL SparkassenStars . The season ended in the quarter-finals against the Scanplus Baskets Elchingen. In spring 2019, VfL parted ways with coach Gary Johnson , until the end of the season Felix Engel and Petar Topalski looked after the squad on a temporary basis, before the Spaniard Félix Bañobre was signed as the new head coach in April 2019 . In December 2019, the board member responsible for finances, Hans Peter Diehr, announced that the team's plans include the plan to move up to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA in the 2020/21 season at the latest .

Ladies

The VfL women managed to win the championship in the Regionalliga West in the 2018/19 season under the leadership of coach David Glöckner.

youth

According to the association, the most important focus is youth work. Accordingly, there are performance-oriented teams as well as sports-oriented teams for boys and girls of all ages. The club has already done special youth work by founding the Carbon Baskets, which took part in the youth basketball league (JBBL). To this end, VfL AstroStars Bochum entered into a long-term cooperation with SVD 49 Dortmund. As a result of the cooperation agreement, the SVD withdrew from the regional league in order to do the youth work for VfL AstroStars Bochum in the eastern Ruhr area. From the 2018/19 season, VfL AstroStars Bochum was part of the Metropol Akademie Ruhr. Together with Citybasket Recklinghausen and ETB Wohnbau Baskets Essen, VfL became the third sponsor and will therefore also take part in the Metropol Baskets in the NBBL and JBBL in the future . The Carbon Baskets were also integrated into the Academy as Metropol YoungStars and, after successfully qualifying, also played in the JBBL as the second team.

Together with Citybaskets Recklinghausen, VfL AstroStars Bochum has been running the WNBL project Metropol Girls for the next generation of female basketball players since 2013 .

Foundation phase

Basic idea of a cooperation

At the end of the 2000s, the actually rival big Bochum basketball clubs VfL Bochum BG and BG Südpark came up with the idea of wanting to work together more intensively in the interests of better promoting young talent in the youth sector. Both clubs felt that the necessity was dictated by the fact that the new founding of the JBBL and NBBL and the settlement of corresponding teams in the Ruhr area made it increasingly difficult to keep talented youth players in Bochum. VfL Bochum in particular, whose youth work always had a good reputation, suffered from the fact that the first men's team in the senior division only played in the regional league. In order to offer young talents better prospects, both youth departments of the clubs in particular urged a cooperation with the task of providing a separate team for the JBBL and the NBBL.

Type of cooperation

Although both clubs were in principle clear about the need for cooperation, it took over two years to turn this cooperation into reality. This was mainly due to the fact that there was hardly any agreement on the type of cooperation. Three models were considered for the cooperation discussions:

  1. A relaxed cooperation and the division of the youth area according to gender or year
  2. A syndicate of both clubs
  3. A merger of both clubs

The first model was quickly discarded. A division by gender was out of the question for representatives of both clubs. It would have been possible to break down according to age groups, but this had the major disadvantage that every two years a year group would have to enter the competition as a young age group, which would run the risk of not being able to consistently achieve important qualification points in the youth leagues. The second model was also discarded because the representatives of VfL Bochum in particular did not want the old clubs to act as a mere legal shell that only took on the management of members. Traditionally, the sporting decisions of the gaming community are made in an executive working group which, in the opinion of the VfL representatives, is not sufficiently legitimized by the general meeting.

Merger

The merger did not take place as a classic merger of the two clubs. To avoid the impression that one club was being taken over by the other, both sides agreed to re-establish VfL AstroStars Bochum. As a first step, on January 2, 2012, the members of the two parent associations were transferred to the new association. The members of BG Südpark also acquired membership in the VfL Bochum 1848 general association. Until the end of the 2012/2013 season, all members stayed in their old clubs that had played the season to the end. Membership in the old clubs ended on June 30, 2012, so that from July 1, 2012 the members are only active in the new club VfL AstroStars Bochum, which at the same time took over the licenses of the old clubs. After both general assemblies had approved this procedure, the new club was officially founded directly after the extraordinary general assembly of VfL Bochum BG on December 1, 2011 in the Bochum round sports hall.

organization

VfL AstroStars Bochum as the basketball department of VfL Bochum 1848 e. V. is a legally independent departmental association. All sporting and organizational matters of the basketball players are regulated independently by the board of directors, independent of the executive committee of the entire club. The consent of the VfL Bochum Presidium is only required to amend the statutes. The chairman of the basketball department belongs to the presidium through his office. Members of the basketball department are automatically also members of VfL Bochum 1848 e. V. General Association. The first team's game operations are outsourced to VfL SparkassenStars Bochum Marketing GmbH.

Largest basketball club in Germany

The merger resulted in the largest basketball club in Germany in terms of active membership. In the Top 100 of the German Basketball Federation (published in 2012), the members were still recorded separately according to their old clubs, but if the numbers of participants from both clubs were added, the VfL AstroStars Bochum with 660 active members had the most members before the USC Freiburg (595) . In 2013 and 2014 the club reached second place behind Alba Berlin.
